My New Table Top SFG

I am new to the forum and very excited in planning a square foot garden for next spring. I am trying to learn all I can by using Mel's new book as well as reading as many posts here as possible. Due to health problems, I cannot garden at ground level very well so I decided to construct a table top garden and wanted to share what I have accomplished so far. I plan on crossing a couple of PVC pipes across the 4X4 bed so that I have options to cover the growing area with various protection methods.

Here are a couple of shots of where I am at with this project at this time. I am always happy to hear suggestions or answer any questions.

Love the TT box, as well as the planters on bricks and stands! What are you going to plant in them and when?

Hi CC and thanks for the nice comments. I have not fully put together a growing plan just yet and figured that would be an excellent winter activity while waiting for spring to arrive. I do plan a variety of veggies and various growing methods and mediums as you can see. I will be keeping a detailed log of what does and does not work for me. Looks like I will be throwing myself into this pretty deep as time passes. Very Happy

Oh yeah, it's addicting and fun, sprinkled with frustration and heartbreaks. But most rewarding if we chose to see the glass as half full. Kinda like life, right?

I just started this past spring when my mother was delayed getting up north due to health issues. She was supposed to do the garden but I jumped in and started it...then kept going. Now I can't believe the things I'm into, like saving seeds from my favorite veggies/fruits, and hopefully canning maybe beets this weekend.

It's all pretty amazing and I'm so grateful for the folks on this forum who are willing to share their experiences, strengths and hopes.

Maybe you would post your plan once you have it?

Hi CC, it sounds like you have really taken to this in a big way also and are following a path that lives in my hopes. I would like to save my seeds and maybe even do my own plant starts under indoor grow lights and a warming mat. Of course, much of this is down the road as I would like to concentrate my learning curve on plant varieties, gardening and soil building (composting) for now. I also hope to involve my 3 grandsons in all of this as well.

I will be happy to share my planting plan with you after I develop it and thanks for requesting it.

That looks to be a very nice sturdy TT. Did you build it?
I bet you are really looking forward to next spring, as we are in the Great White North.
Meanwhile I have a bunch of worms to keep me company, as I brought in my Wiggler Hilton from outside as the night time temps are hitting the low 40Fs.
We would love some pictures next year. (Please!)

Hey Kelejan and thanks for the compliments. Yes, I did design and build the box. It is 2 parts, a heavy duty table that holds the SFG box itself. The table is pressure treated and should last thru several regular pine boxes as they deteriorate over time or at least that is my hopes.

The worms sound fascinating and I kinda looked into them, but have my hands full enough for now. I did use worm castings in my MM, but they came from a bag Shocked

I hope to post more pictures as progress takes place and I will most certainly post the growing season. I love to share and enjoy that which others have shared.

bnoles - Depending how far north of Atlanta you are, it's not too late to try a fall garden. Especially if you are going to use some covering. Pikes nursery usually has transplants of lettuce, broccoli, chard, etc. It is definetly not too late for leaf lettuce and radishes. Maybe carrots and chard. Usually gardeners in the Atlanta area say to transplant the brocolli transplants by labor day, but with covering you may have time to get a head started. Again, depends how far north of Atlanta you are.

I was in Pikes the other day and was very tempted on the transplants, but promised myself that I would wait until spring so I could focus on designing and building my garden area. I did pick up several herb transplants and put them in a half barrel on one of my other patios next to the kitchen.

Isn't it a luxury to have a place like Pikes, it even had all 5 of MM's compost ingredients after searching all over the world for them. I should have looked there 1st, but the nearest to me is a half hour drive. I am over here in Paulding county pretty well NW of you.

Oh yes the fall planting temptation is running rampant in my mind, but much work yet to be done in the preparation must come 1st.

If I already had such a wonderful tabletop ready to roll, there is no way I could restrain myself on having a small fall garden. You are stronger than I. I absolutly love my tabletops.

If you change your mind, go for it.

I agree Kay! All the "hard work" is done. Throw some seeds or transplants in and see what happens!!

What a wonderful setup! I am excited for you to get started! It's fun learning the what/where/how/when/why and come spring time you will be more than raring to go, a nice thing that keeps gardening fun is you can never stop learning! I wanted to keep a detailed journal this year and I started one but it got away from me, next year is a new year I will try harder!

To LittleGardener: The grass is St. Augustine and has done very well for us.

Your table top looks so pretty, Good job!
Mine sits on 4 layers of darkish-green painted cinder blocks to blend in with the lawn. The color is nice enough but still looks kind of industrial imho. But the perfect height makes it wonderfully comfortable for tending the bed devoted to strawberries.
