Post  happy232 8/7/2012, 10:56 pm

Hi! I have only 1 square empty by my 5 ft. trellis. I am planting English peas and sugar snaps. which should I put in that square? Would the other be ok with a tomato cage or what structure do you recommend?

Thank you for your time and help!!! =)

I trellis both my sugar snaps and shell peas. Which do you prefer? Very Happy
They can both get to 4 feet sometimes. Do you have another trellis nearby.

Maybe you can use two stakes and string your own trellis. That would work! Very Happy

I see no reason why you can't climb you peas on a tomato cage. It may be a bit short though.

I grew 10 sugar snap peas in a 14" square pot and they climbed a tomato cage. This is the 2nd year I have done it. You do have to watch them closely to make sure they grab on, but I have had reasonable success with it.

I would say, read the packet to see how tall they get! Peas are amazingly diverse. Some only grow two feet tall, whereas others can get to be ten feet tall! The shorter ones say they don't need trellising, but that's really just a lie, lol. Even the short ones appreciate some support, otherwise they climb all over each other and then fall over (in my experience, anyway).

Hi Happy,

I have my dwarf peas along the edge of a box with 12" chicken wire to climb up. They will probably grow up to 24" so can hang over the side if they want.

The regular sized peas I had in the spring grew to about 4 feet up a regular 5 ft garden trellis.

I started my pole beans on bamboo poles but then realized they were going up taller than the pole so I leaned the pole against the cucumber trellis and now they share the trellis.
