Sick sugar snap peas
My sugar snap peas are all turning brown/yellow starting at the bottom and working it's way up the stalk. I just pulled most of them, and the others are starting. Can you tell me what the problem might be?
Thank you
Thank you

Mine are doing the same thing. It is the heat likely. They are cool weather lovers, and don't tolerate the 95 degree days that we (in Ky.) are having lately.
Anyone try these as a fall crop?

Mine are the same due to the heat. I will plant more sugar snaps in a few weeks hoping to get a fall crop.

Ditto here ! Oh well , I really wanted to grow some to pack in my hubby's lunch , I tried some row cover to block some of the direct sun but no go ! We shall try again for fall.

I grow them in the fall and usually have a better harvest than in the spring. They can take a fair amount of frost/ freeze before quitting. The trick is getting them going in 95-100F weather. Lots of shade and water is needed.

I want to plant these for a fall crop. Is the end of July a good time to sow the seeds? I'm in Utah and it's REALLY hot here now!

You could try sprouting the seeds indoors (assuming you have an air-conditioned room) on a moist paper towel inside a baggie. Since the optimum temp for seed starting peas is 40-75 degrees, don't start these on top of the refrgerator or use a warming mat. As soon as you see signs of germination, plant the seeds outdoors. You can cover the planting area with wet burlap to keep the soil temperature down. Once the seeds are up, mulch to keep their roots cool.

Re: Sick sugar snap peas
yep...another sugar snap pea disaster here...
I had 5 bush plants...got a whopping 3 pods off of them. Then they died.
I planted 9 pole plants up against my trellis. The all sprouted great, got about 6 inches tall and died.
So, I yanked them out and put in more cucumbers.
I might try again in the fall. If that doesn't work...no more peas for me....even though that's one thing I REALLY wanted.
