New Central NC Planting Guide

Hi Everyone. I am new to North Carolina and to SFG. I am currently planning my fall garden and getting boxes set up and have learned so much from all of your posts- thank you!

I noticed that the NC Cooperative Extension has issued a new planting guide for vegetables and herbs and thought I would share in case other in the area find this helpful.

to a fellow Tarheel. Are you getting all you Mel's Mix components ok? Please feel free to post pictures of your progress. All of us cheerfully steal/or build on ideas from other gardeners and the pictures help. What is some of your gardening experience and where did you move from? Nosey minds want to know.

Thanks for the warm welcome Kay! I have not yet filled my beds, so have not started gathering the components for Mel's mix. I just built one 4x4 bed with critter cage this weekend just as a trial to give me a better visual when planning the rest of the garden. My challenge is I have to use the front yard as the back is pretty shaded. We also have tons of rabbit pellets on our front lawn from all the wild rabbits here, so now am trying to figure out the best way to keep the rabbits out without being an eye sore to the neighbors! Seeing everyones ideas, pictures and posts on the boards has been very helpful to me in this regard!

I dont have much gardening experience as I lived in downtown DC for the last 8 years, so am so glad to find this place and learn from all of you. Hopefully with some experience I can contribute as well!

My yard is full of rabbits also. I have tabletops because of bad knees and back, but it also keeps the rabbits out of my beds. Here is what I did with my pots of peppers, herbs and field peas.
A pallet on cinder blocks.

Beds raised 1 block high with lattice work around them could look pretty and be rabbit proof.
Do you have a Home Owners Association you have to satisfy? Depending on where in relation to what the neighbors see, a 3ft wire fence around the entire garden area then flowers planted on the fence lines could make a showcase area. A pretty white picket fence and archway entrance with gate would look good around a front garden.

Great pictures and ideas- thanks for posting Kay! Luckily we have no HOA, or city restrictions so just trying to be a good neighbor. Luckily it seems like a pretty open minded area- one of the reasons we love Durham!

Moving from DC to here was a great move, Im sure you loved coming back as well!

The area I have is a bit challenging, its a corner lot with about 8-10 feet closest to the curb (no sidewalk) flat and sunny, and as you approach the house it goes down hill all around. I'll post some pics and some of my ideas soon in case anyone has any good ideas.
