Midday wilting of both fourteen ft. long atlantic giant pumpkin vines in extreme heat. Isn't that the saddest looking thing? Central Ohio had 25 days above 90 degrees so far and still counting....

This is how a freaky pepper grows during freaky heat, it is 7 inches long.

Oh you are growing some beautiful things! Wow that is funny how your giant pumpkin wilts during the day and recovers at night. She is one beautiful mama of Amanda and Betty Boop! Your compost looks so nice also! Your mortgage lifter is sure producing so well, I will have to get me one of those next year because it sure is doing good! Are they tasty? My tomatoes are smaller than marbles still. Hopefully they will decide to grow bigger plants and bigger tomatoes before too long. Thank you for sharing! Very Happy

Triciasgarden - Thanks! I don't know how they taste, it's the first time growing mortgage lifters. The picture shows a cluster but there is a dozen more on the plant. All the fruit is green so I'm looking forward to them ripening. The pumpkins are growing out of one small pile of compost, the second bin to the left is a work in progress, the third bin to the left is hidden in the picture. It's ready to sift and be stored in bags and containers.

I laffed out loud here at work when I saw that you named your pumpkins! Laughing So cute! And they recover so beautifully from the heat. Plants are truely amazing, aren't they?

You have peppers already? That's great! Mine are still flowers.

Good to know about the Mtg Lifters. I'll be on the look out for them next yr. All my maters are still tiny, too, except the occasional Sungold cherry that I cut in half and split with my mom. Together we ooo and ahhh over each one. I love you

Some of my squash are showing that same heat stress. It finally killed my yellow squash. No worries though, Patti told me NO MORE. I have been giving them away, freezer is good on yellow squash for the year. Very Happy

Looking forward to Aussie butter squash (do they need names?).

Great pics! okay
My husband wants to do some big vine plants next year, but not sure if they will be pumpkins or watermelon. I could can pumpkin for pies, but he wants the watermelons for eating.
I grew mortgage lifters last year (had a late start, June 15) but they still grew over 6 ft tall, and produced monster size tomatoes. They are a little pink looking, but full of flavor.
I had let some fall and rot, and had 30 starts come up this year that I was able to transplant, and already have a softball size one starting to turn. I think you'll be very happy with the ML.

We had temps around 115 this summer and my plants did not wilt because I had 30% shade cloth over them. I also found out that Home Depot sells small sheets of shade cloth. Remay works great and so do sheets. Just make a little tent.......even just a few post to tie the sheets to.

CC Ha, glad you laughed, I'm going in alphabetical order, obviously after Betty Boop I'm working on 'c' and 'd' and 'e' names since there are 3 more immature females. And the peppers finally all have fruit, called "Tasty Orange", Chocolate, Big Bertha, and Sweet Banana. Pepper plants always look weak yet produce, I'd love to know if there is a nutritional trick to getting them robust looking.
SJ Thats funny -- "No More" says Patty. I'm beginning to feel that way about sweet banana peppers. SOmeone said they got over 200 from 1 plant, I have 2 plants and its already crazy production. I put em in my salad, my breakfast eggs, shouldn't complain about the freshest possible! I've got to start freezing these crazy things. I am taking your statement about the heat killing your vines very seriously.
Rose - yes, the smallest compost heap became the bed for the pumpkin vines. I felt pretty good about putting them in a straight nutrition kind of bed with last Autumns contents. We'll see how this plays out.
TinaK Tell your husband to have fun and grow both types of vines! I read the 1885 amish paste brandywines are considered pink, the pictures I've seen wasn't a strong pink so it's good to know they are suppose to look like that. I am shocked at their leaf size, the biggest one I measured from stem to tip was 5 and 1/4 inches long.
CarolynPhillips Between what Squat Johnson and you have said, I am going out right after finishing this post to get a sheet over those vines. Thank you both in advance.

I'm growing my squashes & melons on mounds made from last falls compost also, nothing else in them. I've never been able to grow them before so like you, I'll just sit back and watch.

I've been drowning in banana peppers since May. Already pickled some and have put some up in the freezer, but they just keep on coming!

So -- I suppose if peter picked a peck of pickled peppers it probably came from one picking from a couple of sweet banana plants? yahoo
