Question about fly control

Hi folks! Quick question!

My neighbor raises rabbits, she currently has about 26 of them. Well, obviously they create a lot of poo a lot of the time. I try to take as much of it as I can and she also uses it in her traditional row garden. She called me today to say that the flies are starting to get a bit out of control because of the poo. She said she had heard that farmers put lime on poo to eradicate them. Her question to me was if this was safe since the poo is used for our veggie gardens. My first instinct is a big fat NO. Didn't they use lime in the "old days" to disintigrate human bones? If this is the same stuff I'm thinking of, I definitely wouldn't want that in my composting material. But, seeing as I'm completely new to all aspects of gardening, I told her I would ask my really smart friends on this forum. If it is indeed a big no-no, is there anything organic to be used on the flies?

Yes, just lightly sprinkle good old fashioned ground limestone (Not quicklime or anything else). Crushed limestone is cheap and good for the garden. It will actually be a benefit in liberating calcium in the soil so plants can take it up.
The other alternative is to sprinkle wood ash on the top, even cheaper than the limestone.

LYE!! THAT's what I was thinking of. Well cool!!! I think crushed limestone will be easy to come by around here, it's pretty much what this whole area is made up of, haha. Can it be purchased at a place like Lowes or would it only be at a nursery? Thank you so much!!!

I get it at the grain store. It is sold in 50# for around $8....bags are very heavy.
