I'm in the PNW -- and all my calculations are iffy - never was good at math!! Laughing
according to ANSFG - I should be planting broccoli seeds indoors June 1-15 for transplant in mid-end of July. Does that sound right? Why can't we plant them direct in the garden? I have drip system there, and am gone from home frequently - not really set up for starting seeds indoors.

Kind of the same question on cucumber seeds - it says indoors July 8, why not outdoors?

Same question on leaf lettuce around mid July?

What about purple sprouting broccoli? Does it follow a schedule more like brussel sprouts? And what is that schedule??

Yep - I'm a newbie!! Embarassed

If you have squares to do so, go for it! You can transplant from the 'nursery' square to the final place as needed. Cucumbers are happier not transplanted any ways.

i think with the cool weather crops like broc they may not germinate in the ground if its to hot out.....LOL....i know...i said *if* its to hot out side....*if*

so if you start them indoors where it is suppose to be cooler....ha ha.....then they will be up and ready to transplant when the weather gets cooler.....

thats my thoughts on it....with that....i think we are going to direct seed in july Shocked

maybe do a few starts indoors just to make sure.....this has been a crazy gardening year for us so far......

hugs

In the fall, start seeds indoors because it's too hot outside. We haven't had that problem for a few years. I direct seeded broccoli last year during the third week of July, and had a fantastic harvest.

Rarely does it get so hot that outdoor baby seedlings can't be protected with shade cloth. Given how our weather varies from year to year, picking the right time to plant for a fall garden is really a crap shoot.
