Watering

I know Mel says you can't overwater plants in MM but still wondered about watering. I have a drip system set up about every 6 inches thru out each bed and originally watered for 15 minutes once a day.

With the warmer weather and having removed the plastic covers and put the mesh ones on, they get watered for 30 minutes once a day. I don't find anything standing in water either. My plants are still pretty young.

You can't overwater MM because it drains so nicely and doesn't leave the plant sitting is soggy soil, but that doesn't mean you should not watch your watering as you can underwater and also wash out nutrients.
There is no point in wasting water.

Walsh, my neighbor is using MM, and it is amazing stuff. It retains moisture so well...does that add to problems with roly polies or earwigs...or other moisture loving pests?

I don't know. This is my first summer. I had a spring garden and a fall garden last year. Maybe another member has an answer.

Funny how you read something and a little later you see a post that you can pass it on. You may already know this, but . . . I just read that when watering carrots using a drip system is not good when just starting seeds. The germination process is tricky and soil needs to be kept evenly moist. Carrots have short roots and anything planted between drip lines won't get enough water. You need to water from above with a light spray to keep soil evenly moist until the plants are 3-4" high.

I would think that lots of seeds would need to be started this way until they are well established.
