Tomato flavor question Empty Tomato flavor question

Somewhere I read that pruned tomato plants will decrease the flavor of the fruits because the leaves somehow contribute to the flavor. Anyone ever hear of this???

I don't know if I over pruned last year or if burpee early girl isn't tasty. I don't want to ruin this years brandywine, mortgage lifter, and supersweet 100's.

I've heard something similar, actually. When doing research on dwarf tomatoes, I read that because they don't have as many leaves, the fruit isn't as sweet. I'm thinking it might have to do with photosynthesis, but that's just an educated guess so don't take my word for it.

Tomato flavor question Empty Early Girls

Post  Suzy 6/16/2012, 5:10 pm

It hats been my experience that Early Girls, usually the first tomato ready to eat in the garden, have less flavor than others. Most of the hybrids are going to be less flavorful than the heirlooms, but I can't wait for the heirlooms to be ready to eat - so I always plant the Early Girls, too. Smile I don't know about the decreased flavor due to pruning, I know folks that prune their plants to a single vine, and the tomatoes are fabulous. I would suggest it's more due to the variety of the plant than the pruning. IMHO.

I don't know about the leaves thing, I am a wimp when it comes to pruning tomatoes. So I will use this as yet another excuse to not do so Laughing

I found Early Girl to not be worth the effort. THe flavor was poor and in the green house it is no earlier than the much better tasting Big Beef. That said... heat units in the summer can really affect the taste of tomatoes. When I have a cool summer tomatoes ripen but do not taste as good as hot summer tomatoes. And the late ripening tomatoes in the fall are not as good as the hot season ripening ones. Last in taste comes those that ripen on the counter.
