One per square foot. normal spacing is every 10 inches. Might get away with 2 per square, but for first time I would leave it at one.

Oops to the one per square foot. I planted two per square. I am a first time celery grower so I guess I will see how it turns out. I will be placing a container (round tube shape) around it when it gets bigger for containment and blanching. That is one of the reasons I love to garden, I learn so much about new things.

I think especially if you do that you might be able to get away with two per square. let us know!

Well on this gardening program I have, it said to do 9 celery per square and that has NOT worked out. NONE of them has done anything. So I would say one, or maybe 2

I want to bump this thread because I'm about to indoor seed some celery and it's not listed in SFG book that I can see.

Any further thoughts on spacing for celery in SFG? I'm leaning between 1 or 2, not sure which. I see someone here planted 4 and I'm wondering how that worked out.

4 per square worked out fine for us....but...i also believe it would depend on what is being planted around that square if you are going to put something around the celery to blanch it before harvesting.....

I think I'm putting my row of celery between a row of eggplants and a row of peppers, so it would most likely have a bit of shade.

4 sounds good. Hmm.

GWN, did you plant your celery stumps? Or seed?

All I have for celery are those stumps that Plantoid taught us how to root. If we put celery stumps 4/sq, will they blanch? Or should we wrap them in cardboard or cloth or something?

Hooray, another experiment to try. Thanks plantoid mentioning about regrowing celery from stalks. I've got to try that. Starting from seed never worked for me. I went to google and checked out a few different methods used and will try the one with slitting the bottom of the stalk in an X about 1/8th inch deep, soaking it in warm water overnite, than planting it in fertile soil. I'll take pics.
Maybe I can finally grow my own in my SFG.

QB, I have been planting celery stumps since last fall when Plantoid mentioned it. I never knew to put X's in the bottom though. I put them in water in my kitchen window overnight then out to the garden. They grew a bit, but were like tiny bushes instead of stalks. So I have to figure out how to blanch them, getting them to grow taller. I think my fall season isn't long enuff for them.

I have about 6 stumps now growing in my window at different stages of development. Here's a pretty old photo from back when I started this batch: spacing for celery??? Photo510

I watched a few videos on utube and one claimed that his slitting the bottoms made the roots grow quicker.
I've got one started in warm water now overnite.

QB, What did your research say about how to blanch them? Or did it?

spacing for celery??? Empty Blanching celery and a few other celery tips

Post  plantoid 3/8/2013, 5:30 pm

CC and others you can use top hats and once the plant is five inches clear of the original level of mm wrap some paper round the stalks and add MM to the top hat then when the next 5 inches protrudes again wrap with paper and put the next top hat on and fill to an inch or so below the lowest leaves .
do keep watering so that the moisture level is consistant or else the celery will split

If you do it in deep bed mm like mine I've planted the trimmed stumps at the bottom of a 6 x6 x6 inch deep hole and wrapped a bit of single sided corrugated carboard round to make the collar then back filled.

Once it climbed a foot tall added further collars of corrugated cardboard .
We had 15 inch long celery on boxing day evening meal .
the celery got hit with the frost two days ago I took off the collard to let the sun at the bplants and carefully sliced off any frosted damaged / brownish looking stalks .

Early on this evening I saw the colour coming back in the celery , if it's fine tomorrow I'll put new collars back on the plants .

When we want a stick or two of celery I untie the rubberized wire wraps on the carboard and slice off the stalks then re wrap the celery .

One thing I have done is put a cut down drinking fountain water bottle ( as a cloche ) over each newly planted stump to protect them from the frost.

If you leave the stumps in water to develop mini roots don't put more than a 1/4 " ( 6 mm ) of water in the vessel for once the feet of the celery get wet rot soon sets in .

My thoughts on this are now ...cut the stump put it in 1/4 " of water for 24 to 48 hrs and then plant out into well wetted MM.

One good reason to grow your own celery is I have heard there is a lot of pesticide residue on store bought celery.

On, 3-20-13, I planted 8 celery (one seedling and 7 seeds), 4 yellow onion seeds and 4 red onion seedlings = 16 per square.  Today, the celery seedling needs to be side trimmed and wrapped, 3 of the celery seeds are so-so, and 2 red onions are still growing.  I think I would back up to a max of 9 for celery.
