Potato Bag Questions
Have read lots here on growing potatoes, and have a question...
Most of the instructions that I have read *since my potatoes were already planted* state to plant the seed at the bottom and cover a little with soil... topping up the soil as the plant grows, to about 1-foot above the seed, then let grow.
The instructions on my bag just told me to cover with a foot of soil.
So, the questions are:
Should I remove some soil? If so, is it too late if I planted the potatoes a couple of weeks ago to go back and do this? (No vegetation showing in the bags yet.)
How long does it usually take for potatoes to start showing at the surface?
Many thanks in advance for your help!!

Re: Potato Bag Questions
I know the instructions say pile on the dirt, but, even in a row garden, you let the potato grow, then put more dirt on. If I were you, I'd take dirt out til you find the top of the potato plant, then add dirt to the top of plant, a bit at a time, as plant grows, til it gets to the top of bag. The folks that wrote the instructions have never grown potatoes!

Re: Potato Bag Questions
I think it took my outside bags three weeks or so to show through four inches of enriched garden soil these were set on a 4 inch thick bed then covered in the extra 4 inches of enriched soil.
In the glasshouse about 12 days in four inches of MM with spuds set ontop of four inches of MM
All my spuds had three inch or more chits / sprouts coming out of them. if you planted well eyed but sproutless spuds that time to show through will be a bit longer.
Usually we wait till the tops are about 7 or 8 inches above the soil then earth up wwith four or five inches of earth .
Tonight I noticed my spuds in my glasshouse in MM in bags have gone mad and sprung up 12 inches or more in just over 48 hours , ever since I used spray on sunshade that lets light pass through if it rains onthe outside glasshouse
I've since managed a healthy 80 oF in the glasshouse for about 14 hours a day.... I have to sort them out tomorrrow & will add around nine inches of MM to the bags plus I'll fit some homemade extentions of semi rigid black plastic sheet to continue the bag skywards.

Re: Potato Bag Questions
HI Marie
We are in the same zone.
The weather here lately seems to be great for the potatoes. I am sure you will be seeing them again in a week or so.
Mine froze 10 days ago when we got the unexpected hard freeze, and they all looked dead.
BUt this week they have regrown and look healthier than ever.
Do you have anything else up?

a little behind much of what I'm seeing on this forum... but here is how it's going here (took the pics today):

I
built some raised SFG, since we are trying to make the permanent
gardens in our yard perenial low maintenance, for any future homeowners.
Just made them 2x4-foot, so that we can move them around if need be.
In
this garden I have malibar spinach from seed (third year trying, first
year in MM, first year getting past the 1 cm height), and cucumber and
strawberry plants (purchase
Here
I have beans and peas (not sure which is which, since I planted them
with the kids, got distracted, and forgot what was where), one
strawberry plant, and some fennel:
Four
empty squares - TBD. One green bell, one orange bell, one cayenne, and
one jalepeno pepper plants... purchased from the local farmer's market
(the ones I planted from seed did not grow - I hear they need heat,
which they will get next year!):
Carrots at the far end, onions closer, and a couple of squares seeded with butternut squash:
My
lettuce mostly from seed, with two transplants that were from re-seeds
in our mulch - the transplant looks a little rough, but they look like
they will survive (empty SFG below - have been using soil to top up my
potato bags):
Pot
with potatoes and two potato bags, freshly covered in MM, plus one pot
of MM with a bay plant and a strawberry plant (also can see garlic in
rows planted last fall):
My
herb garden... not in MMs, and not in SFG... but so happy that so much
came back after the winter (oregano, marjoram, thyme, chives, coriander
reseeded itself!), plus added some new plants from our local greenhouse:
This
is my first year really doing SFG with MM. Everything (to me) is
looking like it will turn out great. Tomatoes and leeks planted from
seed will be planted sometime this weekend, after I've finished
hardening them off.
