Sometimes the strangest ickiest looking things turn out to be one of the best of friends to a gardener...

Most lady bug beetles are beneficial in the garden. They really like to eat aphids.

Although I'm sorry to say it's a rare day when I see an actual ladybug. Maybe once a year around here. Maybe I should order some.

Then again, it's a rare day when I see aphids, too!

Wow, very helpful info camprn. There is so much to learn about helpful insects. I'm trying so hard to minimize things like neem by picking off and squeezing bugs.

It is amazing how similar some bugs look. Good guy and bad guy can easily be confused as the other. The more I know, the more I realize how little I know.

love lady nymphs and adults in the garden...sad thing is I have not seen a single one yet this year...or lacewings, praying mantis, etc...and my garden is getting ravaged by pests.

found this in my raised bed today But next to the bark.

kind of looks like one of the lady bug , but ooks too big to be a lady bug and dont think it is a Caterpillar /butterfly as it was in the dirt hiding in the dark does not like the light. EWWWWW.........bugs and stuff...good or not so good? Img_1510

Something about that looks like a cut worm to me.
Did it curl up? Then it would definitely be a cut worm.
Miller moths are the adult.

Correct curls up and does not like Sunlight heads for shade.

Looks like a grub to me, though it's hard for me to tell for sure from the photo. Is it mostly whitish, with an orange head and legs, and a gray rear? Scroll down a few for a photo: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/field/white_grub.htm
Grubs also curl up in a C shape and head for darkness.

Most grubs are 'bad', but apparently there's at least one 'good' kind:

oh maybe it was bumble flower grub hard to tell was in the soil the marking kind of look d lady bug back end? have to wait tell is see another, at least now i have two possible candidates thanks recoush

I'm not sure which aspect of the back end of a ladybug you mean. The head of both grubs and cutworms tends to be shiny like a ladybug's shell.
