Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that I bought a bunch of bare root stock from Walmart for a dollar each (normally $3). There was asparagus (it will be hard waiting a year or 2 for these though), strawberries, onions, garlic, potato and shallots. I bought some asparagus, strawberries and garlic. These come in plastic bags with some potting soil in them. Some looked dry so I looked for the ones with roots.

I'm giving some to friends that have some nice gardens going also.

I bought a bag of the bare-root strawberries at Lowe's (same brand as the ones at Walmart). I planted them 10 days ago, two inches into the MM as the packet said, and I'm watering them religiously but absolutely nothing is happening! I dug one up today and it looked exactly the same as when I first put it in the soil! Is there some special trick to bare-root stuff, or is it just that the "guaranteed to grow!" on the packet is a great big lie?

Good question. I planted some last year but it was end of season (doh) so I just figured they were old/dead. I planted some I picked up at Walmart 7 days ago... no change thusfar.

The crown should be just above the soil line. If you have 2" of MM on top of the crown, you're going to kill them(though I may have misread it).

No, you read it correctly -- the packet said plant to a depth of two inches -- I'll dig them up and see if I can save them!

Most bare root stuff is packed in wood shavings or so Ive seen. I think that if you soak them in water for at least a few hours maybe overnight would be better then replant them you might see a difference. I think that two inches for the strawberries is way too deep. From my planting guide it says "Plant so that the crown is even with the surface of the soil and make sure all the roots are covered." Hope this helps.
