Hi everybody, this region is HUGE so I am curious has everybody else had a mild spring as I have had? I have planted outside as of a few days ago, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots, radishes, and strawberries. Mother's Day is when I traditionally plant flowers so I am looking foward to that as I have been vigorously busy building/designing and new flower bed!

On a sad note I lost about 18 of my babies today due to neglect. I set a 72 ct cell tray down on top of a bbq grill and the wind blew it over. I lost all but 2 of my geraniums, about 4 peppers, and all of my blanket flowers:( . The nasturtium, most of the peppers, and blanket flowers are doing well considering the circumstances.

Sad Sorry to hear of your loss.

Yes, so far it's been a very warm spring. I've taken the plunge and planted lot's of cool weather crops and most are doing great, except for a pest issue and the dang wind! I lost a few of my very first transplants with an unexpected freeze, but since then if we are anywhere near the neighborhood of a freeze, I've been covering the plants. At this point I figure I'm either a few weeks ahead, or loose a few plants.
My concern now is a very dry and hot summer Mad

I hear ya, I had to cover last night and will tonight again. I started a little extra of everything in the chance I do loose a few then whatever I have left I will just find homes for! So far everything looks great and I didn't do the best hardening off either, sometimes I lack patience....

Same here. I will admit that the spinach and lettuce that I did harden off for about 2 weeks did far better and has survived a couple of light frosts since transplanting.

WHat is going on is wind, snow, rain and me grumbling. The window sill is full. The greenhouse has been deeply dug chasing out the quack grass roots. I bought supplies yesterday to make some hoop cold frames over the beds I want to plant musk melons, cucumbers, peppers and eggplant in. So I can work in the garage on those.

In the garden the garden peas are up except where the chickens got in and scratched. I have some fillers for there planted on the window sill....
The lettuce and other greens are starting to sprout~ bok choi, raab, spinach. I planted marigolds and violas around some beds. The broccoli and brussel sprouts are under a cover in the beds too.

We had some flurries last night and it's supposed to frost again tonight, I left a pot outside last night that has green onions, strawberries and a nasturtium in it and saw it this morning and that flower looked as good as can be!

What is going on in this region? High temps have me excited to plant! Empty Gambling - some items in the ground

Post  Gary NM 5/3/2012, 1:13 pm

Here in the 4 Corners our last average killing frost date is May 14. I have had broccoli, cabbage, and onions in the ground for two weeks or so. It rained, snowed, and blew dust, all on the same Saturday that I planted.

I put in strawberries today and one tomato plant. I will cover the tomato if needed. Low tonight will be 39 if as forecast.

I also use earthboxes, and have had lettuce, spinach, and broccoli planted there for two weeks or so. I have tomatoes in Walls of Water in the earthboxes. I transplanted squash and zucchini into earthboxes over the past few days, but it is easy to cover and protect in the earthbox.

Corn and pole beans will go in Mother's Day. I am ordering Jericho lettuce seed which is not supposed to bolt, and will plant it directly in the SFG.

Sounds like you have been busy Gary, I look forward to planting on Mother's day but that's flowers! I am nowhere near close enough to to get to put my tomatoes and squash in the ground yet so I am a little jealous!
