Collard Greens Question
I'm looking at my pack of collard greens and the "thin to" spacing is 18 inches. I've seen pictures of collard greens from some of the members here and it looks like they have one per square. I also have seen a square foot garden planting chart from another website and it tells me that I can either plant 1 or 4 plants per square.
Since I am a bit late, I've decided to purchase collard greens in plant form and I'll save my seeds for a fall/winter crop.
I'm kinda confused.
What do you guys and girls recommend for spacing??

Re: Collard Greens Question
One per square and expect hang over. I have mine planted on an outside edge and keep the bottom leaves cropped, even if I have to freeze that particular batch of leaves. Personal preference, I like to fully cook my collards before freezing. They just taste better to me. They get as big as broccoli plants.

Re: Collard Greens Question
Well in my garden plan(version 9) I have 3 squares of collards right next to head lettuce. I planned it that way so that the lettuce is shaded somewhat. On the other side of the collards is broccoli raab...not sure if I am going to keep that there. I am also thinking that I should move my collards to another part of the box.
Are collards fast-growers? In other words, will I be able to cut them periodically to cook them and still have a steady supply of leaves throughout their growing season?

Re: Collard Greens Question
Yes, collards grow fairly quickly during the spring and summer. I had 6 plants over the winter in the hoophouse and would cut about 4 leaves per plant at least once a week for just me. I always estimated 1 1/2 plants per person for constant cutting during the summer. But my kids liked collards a lot.
