April: What to plant in No. California/Central Valley area

This is from Gardenate. As I go over the list, it just doesn't compute for everything. Maybe it is because we are in a lower latitude and in my particulate micro-climate, it gets hot early. Bok choy and lettuce tend to bolt. Hot weather crops are either already in the ground or can be sowed directly. Exception are my eggplants which are still in the seed pots, lagging behind the tomatoes and peppers. Onion starts were planted in the winter along with garlic.

I would love to hear from others in their micro-climate regarding this list.

Last year and this, my cabbage has already bolted by this time. I just pulled up the last of the chinese cabbage this week and pulled up danish ball cabbage that never formed a head and has now bolted.

Frustrating!

By the same token, my squash are getting huge and everything I've planted is growing really well. Who can figure it out?

Bolting is the word. I pulled the cabbage, kale and most of the chard a little while ago, getting the beds ready for the bumper tomato crop this year. Very Happy

I transplanted 3 of the rainbow chard in a cool bed in case I want some this summer. A few of the tomatoes have their first flowers! I would love for you to grow the 2 tomato varieties from Iraq to see if they are truly Mediterranean hardy. Maybe next summer.??

Today, I finally direct sowed the Malabar spinach, 4 types of cantaloup, and the rest of the winter and summer squash. Last winter, I stored finished compost on top of the cantaloup and winter squash beds, plus a couple others. It must have been the perfect insulation for the raised beds. The worms went crazy. So, today I'm carefully removing most of the compost and found the lower levels infused with castings!!

I really need their beds so they better hurry up or be sacrificed. As it turned out, I did not plant Malabar spinach last year, it was New Zealand spinach. It is still doing great with one top dressing, through summer, fall, winter and here it is spring - kaboom!

As we are having some warmish weather, this is a good time to start thinking about your summer plans for mulch and shade cloth.

Planted daikons and snap peas in the Salad Bar (sfg tabletop). Cool

Now I'm going to plant more kale, amaranth, lemon balm, bee balm, and comfrey seeds in the house. 4 seasons lettuce is just peeking up in the Jiffy Pellets. Nights still too cold to put anything else outside. Beans are doing well in the Rescue Garden. Everything else doing okay. Cool

I will start new seeds today or tomorrow and put them in the mini-hot house from 2013. The plastic is long gone so I will have to make a new liner and cover. The critters that are digging in my boxes and earth strip are stealthy. hiddenID

I will need to tangle myself all up in bird netting soon to protect the seedlings if I want anything to survive. I'm betting on the 3 red bushy-tailed squirrels I saw on the back fence. April: What to plant in No. California/Central Valley area 671790

I started my melons, cucumbers and green beans this week. They are the fussiest starts for me due to unexpected cold nights. Some are in the ground, some as seedlings. We'll see how it goes. Some years the ground does better, some years the starts, so I do both for safety. Once they're up I cover them with my plastic nut jars if we're having a cold night or two.

It's been so wet I lost some seedlings to dampening off as well. Haven't had that happen before.

I harvested our carrots and most of the beets from the winter. I have tons of onions and they're bulbing up nicely. Lots of garlic, though heaven only knows why the heck I planted any more i have dried ones in mason jars in the garage (we couldn't stand the smell in the house, lol!) Lettuce is trying to bolt but so far I've been able to keep harvesting. First hot day and they're GONERS.

I'll have to take some pictures of our flower gardens and front seating area. This is my favorite time of year out there reading a book or day dreaming.

YIKES! My plan was to put out melons and cukes, today, but our 10-day forecast has 3 nights in the mid 40s coming next week. I hate to leave them in their tiny pots for another week, but I don't want to transplant them twice, either. We're going to Home Depot this morning. I'll see if they have any large peat pots I could put them in. Shocked

It is the great planting season in most of California. Make sure the beds are all amended and trellises are set up. Rain is forecast for most of middle and northern CA next weekend so I am personally holding off setting out any seedlings until it is past. I'll direct sow the beans after that.

The list of plantings can be found above, just scroll up. One plant that hasn't shown up in the nurseries is artichokes. Their suppliers have normally shipped by now. ?? It seems like northern California is in for days of rain, which will delay planting starts, while southern California is in bloom and production. Happy April Gardening!
