Drip Irrigation

I've spent the last 2 days installing a drip irrigation system in all my SFG boxes.

Wow, this was fun, but a lot of work. I know it will pay off.

My only question is, does anyone know of a chlorine filter that can somehow be attached to the system? I would love to filter it out.

Yeah that's John Koler from Growing Your Greens. I pretty much stalk him, and have watched a ton of his videos. Lol, he's the guy I got the idea from, however he said that he had it "plumbed in". Was hoping to find something easier.

The fillter from Camping world looks interesting. I will try one. Thanks!

I have one of these for my camper and it works well. Haven't tried it for gardens and I really can't see that it's worth the money.

LOL - I pretty much stalk him, too. The way he talks, he reminds me of Cheech and Chong of days gone by, but he knows a LOT of stuff and loves teaching it. He's great to watch.

Terry it wouldn't be hard to adapt it for a hose connection I do that kind
of thing all the time. check out my post on my watering grid.

Another solution that might work for you (works for me): use an aquarium/fountain pump. I use the water from my rain barrel and pump it in in to my drip system. If I were real ambitious, I'd install the pump directly in to my rain barrel and skip the 5 gallon bucket altogether.

He's probably smokin a little of that Cheech and Chong stuff too. Maybe that's what he grows in his BACK yard...

Have you considered getting rain barrels with a hose bib? that's an option to get around the city water issue...although if you're having a drought like we are that may not help a lot.

Also, we found a filter for around $11 or $12 that connects right to our hose bib...we have a well for our outdoor watering needs, and extremely high iron and a touch of sulfur, so we had to find something to filter it...but I believe it has a carbon filter, which will work well for city water. It's worked like a charm on our water, and it has a replaceable water filter cartridge.

I have it set up to mostly drip. I do have a few sprayers in certain places, such as the ones in the pic. The drippers didn't really show up for pics. I have both 1/4 inline drip, as well as some areas with exterior drippers. I was pretty much experimenting with the whole system to see what worked best. I have 4 boxes, so had quite a bit of room to play around.

I actually have a rain barrel and really wanted to hook up the system to that, however I was afraid since I have 4 boxes, and a pretty big area, I wouldn't have enough pressure. I would have to install more rain barrels around the area to get the pressure for each box, or install a pump, and I figured for now, a filter would be more economical to install. But yes, rain water would be the best!

I know you're using a drip system, but just an fyi. You can do as Mel suggests in the book and leave buckets of water out in the sun. If your local water district uses chlorine, it will evaporate off fairly quickly (hours). If however, they use Chloramine that isn't an option as it does not evaporate/dissipate. Most water districts these days are using Chloramine...

Do you know if a filter would take out the Chloramine? I guess I could research that, just thought you may have a quick answer...

The video mentions it, but if you use one of these filters to remove chlorine, make sure that you change the filter frequently. I work in the dialysis industry and water treatment is a must. The chlorine adheres (sticks to) the carbon particles. If the particles reach saturation, all of the chlorine will "dump" and rush out to the garden. I always wondered why plants grew so much better on rain water than city water. This might be one of the clues.
