Holy Asparagus, Batman!
Wow! I planted it on Thursday and it was up today!!! Yay!!! Now, this may be normal. I have no idea since I've never planted asparagus before, but I was totally shocked when I saw it up. One spear is almost 3 inches long! I do have a question. Do I wait until it all comes up to cover it with some more MM or do I cover each individual plant as it comes up?
Thanks,
Lee Anne

Lee Ann, not an expert but I would say let a few more come and start pushing some mm around the base as they begin to show!! And congrats!

you may only get one stem from newly planted asparagus the first year. I would leave the crowns barely exposed for a while longer, and cover them when you are sure no more shoots are coming up. Don't harvest this year. Instead, let any shoots that form mature (into fern like fronds) and die back. That way the root system has a chance to get better established. If you cut them off this year, there will be little to feed that root system and you might set them back or lose them altogether over the winter.

Thanks, Jan and Nin. ...so I should have left the top of the plant exposed? If that is correct, I didn't plant them right. I put 2 inches of dirt over it. I do have several with three spears coming up. Although it will difficult, I won't cut any off this year.:-)
Thanks again,
Lee Anne

Lee Anne, you will do fine ! how many plants did you plant? Add more fill as you can, take good care of them thru late summer and fall and if you don't think you are deep enough now you can add more fill before spring when you remove this years growth. The more ferns you have thru the summer the more asparagus you will have next year.

You have treats in store !! I've had asparagus planted in a 6.00 Walmart tub for 6 yrs now...
In the spring I harvest for @ 4 wks.... I cut here from Feb thru April... not a large harvest but oh so delicious !!! I wish I had a place to plant a much larger plot....
