I find it so frustrating how little they tell you on the seed packages.
I have been germinating perennials while I wait until I can plant my veggies. I planted several of them, reading the instructions on each of them.
I knew that it took 4 weeks for columbine to germinate, that is all they said.
All of my other flowers have germinated, been repotted and are thriving.
Today I thought I would read more about columbine online and turns out they need to be refrigerated for 3 weeks and then heated.
I have had mine on a heating pad for 6 weeks......
I planted 2 packages of them and got only 3 plants, NO WONDER......... silly me

From now on I am going to completely ignore the package instructions..... study

We had the same issue with some very expensive columbine seed that I got Steve for Christmas Sad Even buying from a specialist dealer, the information didn't include that little tiny bit of "oh so important" information. We did manage to get about a half dozen, but should have had over 60 of different varieties. Evil or Very Mad

I have taken out all of the planted seeds and put them outside in the cold garden to have their cold spell and then after a few weeks I will bring them in again.
It just seems that the instructions on the package were opposite to what I should have been doing. Sad

I just love Columbines, so hope to get a few from this "measure"

I almost bought columbine seed yesterday, but decided to wait. Glad I did. Now I know what NOT to do. Thanks.

You SHOULD buy columbine seeds, you just need to refrigerate them for a few weeks

I know what you mean.

I'm in Tennessee, zone 7a.

I'm no expert gardener, and Spring can be fairly mild around here, but there's no way in the world I can get my veggies ready for harvest by the time listed on those packets. Maybe the folks down in zones 8, 9 & 10 can, but I don't think I've ever had a 4th of July mater (and that's usually >100 days of grow time for me).

Yes I agree, I usually double the time, OR 1.5 the time, and my seeds come from Canadian seed companies that KNOW how cold it gets here Smile

I'm very disappointed in a few seed companies myself. I find that some don't have ANY instructions on their packets, like Comstock and some are just generalized about sowing either inside or planting outside like Southern Exposure.

The really good ones from whom I happen to purchase seeds are Johnny Selected Seeds and Territorial Seeds and Burpee which puts full instructions on the back of their packets and important data like Days to Maturity, etc on their fronts. If I didn't have past experience or my Mel's books, I'd be lost sometimes. I don't envy the new gardeners.
