Bermuda Grass
I'm trying to clear a spot for my garden that was bermuda grass. How do you get rid of it? The roots are 6 inches into the dirt. We've tilled it up and tried to pick the roots out, but there is no way to get rid of all of it. Last year, I put black plastic around my blueberries to try and get rid of it. The plastic stayed down the entire summer and part of fall. I put a few new blueberries out this year, so dug holes and threw the dirt to the side. Would you believe the grass is growing out of those chunks of dirt that had been covered? I'm at a loss of what to do and am hoping someone has a solution.
Thanks,
Lee Anne

The way I have dug up bermuda grass was to rent a sod cutter and cut it out. Tilling it up just mixes it in the dirt and it will grow back. I think bermuda spreads by runners on the top of the soil AND roots underground. It is very prolific grass in the south, which is why all the ball fields use it. It is great for a lawn, but tough to get rid of. I would dig it up by taking a flat shovel and scooping underneath, like your trying to cut the roots and pull it out like sod.
