Plants for small space gardening
Some how I got on the MotherEarthNew email list and they have some interesting articles. Today's email included a long article on small space gardening and our guru Mel was included as a prime contributer to the field. Of interest to me is the list of small space plants and a company that sells them. Included are a squash and a zucchini that take less space.

‘Alibi’ Cucumber. You’ll need an alibi to tell your family after you’ve picked this short-vine variety clean and eaten all of the cukes yourself. Matures in 50 days.
‘Bush Delicata’ Squash. If you absolutely must plant squash in your tiny space, ‘Bush Delicata’ is a good choice. This open-pollinated heirloom variety only spreads about 4 to 6 feet, and you can save its seeds for the next year.
‘Compatto’ Dill. It may not grow any taller than 20 inches, but ‘Compatto’ will deliver the dill taste you need for salads and garnishes.
‘Green Tiger’ Zucchini. This stout, bushy variety produces brilliant, 6- to 8-inch fruits with glossy, dark green skin and pale stripes.
‘Mohawk’ Pepper. Picture 4- to 5-inch, brightly colored bell peppers spilling over your deck railing or window box, and you’re picturing ‘Mohawk.’
‘Ophelia’ Eggplant. This one is perfect for the patio. The eggplants are small — a little more than 2 ounces each — and grow in clusters like tomatoes do.
‘Temptation’ Strawberry. Compact, vigorous growth makes ‘Temptation’ well suited for hanging baskets, grow bags and short-season climates.
‘Totem’ Tomato. Growing no taller than 2 feet high and requiring no staking, ‘Totem’ offers big tomato taste in a small package.
‘Tumbling Tom’ Tomato. ‘Tumbling Tom’ is a heavy yielder of beautiful, bright red cherry tomatoes. Perfect for hanging baskets, as the tomatoes really do tumble over the edges.

Re: Plants for small space gardening
I'm trying Delicata squash this year. I'll have to check out these others.
Thanks for the info. Might come in handy.

delicata
We've grown delicata squash several times over the past several years. It is without a doubt my very favorite of all the squash. Good luck with yours... we'll have two planted this year.

curio.....Thanks for letting me know Delicata works well for you. It sounds like a winner.
I went to the site and checked out some of those mentioned, but none were in their catalog. I checked out cukes, zucchini, and tomatoes and none were listed. I requested they send me a catalog anyway. I like their prices and amounts of seeds for the small gardener.

Re: Plants for small space gardening
The link is for Pine Tree Seeds, a small, family-owned seed house in Maine. I have purchased seeds from them for years because they have small packets at reasonable prices. For example, this year I purchased Diva cucumber from them, sourced from Johnny's, 25 seeds for $2.25. Johnny's sells a packet of 30 seeds for $3.45. They also sell seeds from High Mowing Seeds, so they have great sources. Even exotics like Black Pearl Pepper, Pine Tree $1.95 for 5 seeds versus Johnny's $7.80 for a packet of unknown seed count.

Those plants were listed in the "container vegetables" section:

Thanks so much Wisp. I looked in hybrid and vegetables, but never thought to check for a container section. They're listed. My oops!
