Sesame Street

I have little ones. We were watching Sesame Street this afternoon, and they had a spot on gardening. There was a guy specifically teaching Murray how to use the hoe "to chop up the hard ground." He talked about how much work it was to get the soil ready for planting.

My almost two year old and I had hearty chuckles, since we have fluffy, soft soil in our TTs!

I hate it when experts tell kids how hard something is. First, it makes it seem like something only "experts" can do, and it discourages the kids from trying it. "Wow, he says it's hard and he's SO MUCH BIGGER than me!" I had a great mentor (maternal grandfather) who would take me to the fields when he worked and I would see him sweat and work hard, but he never told me how hard it was. He only said what a blessing it was to work with the Lord toward a goal, how he felt like he was participating in the act of creation.

That inspired me. I never thought of anything he did as something I could never do, or never wanted to do because it was too hard. I always wanted that feeling of "participating in the act of creation."

If we are going to raise children and grandchildren who will farm and provide food for this nation (and get it out of the hands of the multinational corporation, we need to start thinking about inspiring our kids.

That's great, Rose! I guess he found out how chilly it can be running through that sprinkler.

My four year old and two year old fight over the watering can. They also have a rather large toy dump truck that they fight over when it's time to move something in the yard. Once in a while, they put their heads together and the four year old puts the two year old in the dump truck and drives her around!
