I am planting marigold seeds indoors in to Jiffy peat pots. The seed instructions say to plant them 1/4" deep. The seeds are 1/2" long. In order to get them in the peat pot you must break them or put the point in first and push them in deeper then 1/4". If you put them in point first which end goes down the dark end or the light end?

I lay them sideways on top of the soil then sprinkle a little more soil on top. Just let nature work things out Smile

Last year I tore apart spent marigold seed heads and tossed them around the veggies. They grew like crazy weeds on steroids in mel's mix. Had too many and finally transplanted them out of the veggie boxes to the front of the house flower beds.

Marigold Seeds 61949 DOUGHERTY5,
Yesterday I faced the same issue, as it was my 1st time planting marigold seeds. I scratched a 1/4" "seed length" trench for each one, covered 'em w/MM and watered them in well. Hope they'll grow.

Just for educational purposes the seed end of a marigold is the dark end.

Patty,
So, should the c. 1/2" long seeds have their "tassels" above ground after planting?

The "tassels" do not need to be sticking up. I would go with the lay it down approach. Marigolds are not very picky. Mine reseed in the garden when they feel like it.

i wouldnt be too overpicky about how deep ya plant them when the other half decides too plant hers she jus takes a hand trawel draws a line in the dirt dumps seeds along it an brushs the dirt back over the seeds. she dont care how deep, shallow or how many. an yeah they do tend ta grow. thankfully this happens outdoors where it rains cause anything thats inside plant wise is normaly dead inside a month, that kumquat tree she brought home from lowe's last fall, bite the dust months agoMarigold Seeds 926169
