leaf mold question
I know next to noth'in about composting so here goes... If you let leaves brake down that is leaf mold right? Can it then be used as 1/5 of compost combo. I know it takes next to forever but I think I might try it.

Re: leaf mold question
Just leaves?
You can do whatever you want, seeds want to grow and be fruitful. I am amazed at their ability.
Leaf Mold is leaves that have been composted as a pile of leaves, often (at my farm) in a plastic bag. I've never thought of using just the leaf mold but as part of a 5 type mix it would be awesome.
Ray and I bag up leaves in autumn than add them as layers to my compost every time I turn it. As the bagged leaves age (they are wet in the bag) they darken and start smelling good and earthy, almost mushroomy. I've never checked the Ph but I am guessing it is low.

Re: leaf mold question
Our oak leaves here (primarily red oak and southern oak) seem almost waxy and take FOREVER to compost, unless they are chopped up in the mower. Most of the leaves around our property are oak. I used to rake the leaves from the yard (LOTS) into the same place every year, and after 3+ years, the leaves finally made beatiful, black loam at the bottom of the pile, but some were still intact after all that time.
