Peony, Just tell DH it's awfully hard to tell the sex of baby chicks. Sometimes you don't know until they "outCROW" themselves. Nonna;)

I now have "Nantes Coreless" carrot seed. They're Liberty Garden label and were packed for sale in 2010 . They were 1/2 price, so I'll just have to go with 'em!

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Managed to find a packet of organic Nantes 2 carrot seeds in the local hardware store so I'm joining in from Sydney.
Have no idea what I'm doing since I'm a newbie to SFG and vege gardening but we'll see what happens!

Now this is going to be a real experiment because your seasons are the opposite of ours. I can't wait to see what you get. It is going to be like overwintered carrots to us. Yea for inquiring minds.

The packet says I can plant all year round so I figured I'd give it a go!

I've never grown carrots before, although my Dad (RIP) did when I was a kid! So we'll see what happens, too!

for the encouragement admin.
Just a few more indoor starts, peas outdoors, maybe spinach out there too, and...
then I'm gonna do that carrot box!

Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
Picked up WAY to many carrot seeds this past weekend. One of my kids is a little Carrot crazy. Currently she is planing on planting enough carrots to feed up for at least 4 years and 1200 stalks of corn. All this is not is a SFG but there is at least one bed for each that will be. She wants to know if she can do her own carrots in this challenge. She has some interesting ideas on how to grow an L shaped carrot.

OF COURSE she can participate! It's great to see kids get involved with gardening. I can't wait to see her L shaped carrots. Since she's growing so many, she should be able to do other experiments too. What kind of results will she get by growing them in different mediums? I screen my MM to ¼ inch and the carrots grow differently than those planted in garden topsoil. She could learn about the various ways of putting up carrots for the winter, and then doing it.
Just a couple days ago I harvested the last of the carrots that I planted for carrot week last year. hint hint!
Hopefully others have ideas for experiments too. Have fun.
Re: 2nd Annual Carrot Week
This is one of the reasons I've converted to SFG. This is what happens when (despite best efforts to amend) you plant carrots in heavy clay. lol

I'm pretty sure that is NOT what they looked like on the seed packet.

Lol! Do we need a "carrot with the most legs" category for carrot week?

Yes! Or an abstract carrot catagory. Of course this year I'm in SFG boxes, so we'll see. My 4 yo son was very impressed with those three legged carrots.

I was expecting a nice mixed salad in the end at least, so he wouldn't have to be all by himself anymore.
