I was thinking of testing one of these out with tomatoes next spring.

I was thinking 2 tom plants in it. Does that sound reasonable?

Anyhow, to answer your question: based on the size of the rootballs I took out of my wicking box, I say it's worth a try to grow two toms in a Rubbermaid box.

Those are really good instructions! It looks like it would be really easy to do. Hmmmm... How many of those can I make to plant my tomatoes in next year?? Oh boy! Think of all the extra space I'd have in the SFG if I planted my tomatoes in homemade self watering containers!

You are right Boffer!!! THAT is a serious box....guess your serious and my serious are kinda different! What a Face

Blackrose!! YES! I had such a hard frustrating time with my tomatoes this year I actually ripped them out while they were still producing. The inconsistancy in water they were getting made them have these brown spiral sections on them and I didnt get a single edible one that wasnt cracked or gross... and the pruning was a nightmare in the box...I am hoping exactly what you said!
