Possible good deal your Home Depot
I was in HD today wasting time until the parents were ready to meet for dinner. This cedar raised bed was marked down to $17.00 at my stores. Check your stores for the same deal.

funny I too was at HD today trying to get the 'ingredients" for Mels Mix.
They just laughed at me
Guess will check out the local mom pop store, I am sure that they have some stuff stored away somewhere....

Huh? They may not have vermiculite but they definitely have peat and some of the compost needed. And they will soon, if not already, have MM in bags.

None of the HD stores that I have been to (at least 4) in my area have MM. All the Lowes around here do carry it.

Like many retail outlets, both Home Depot and Lowes both offer price matching. Taking it to the next level, they even offer an additional 10% for pointing it out. So, not carrying the exact same items, like Mel's Mix assures that neither will have to take the hit or discount the item.

I do know that Mel/SFG is in negotiations with HD to carry the Garden Time Mel's Mix. Obviously it is not concluded or possibly not all stores have it yet. I remember when Lowes started to carry it not all of the Lowes had it available. It took awhile to be distributed throughout the chain.
Mels Mix....Home Depot
So many of us live near a Home Depot.....and its regretable they dont carry what we need....the only way we will get attention is to contact headquarters in Atlanta.....so forum members ......have our voice to be heard by contacting them.......Ruth

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
Madnicmom,
I looked at your link and regret that I just visited my local Home Depot and didn't see those! They are really nice looking beds and that price can't be beat! Best part -did you look at all the reviews? Apparently the beds come with extra pieces and so in buying more than one kit you can make a much larger bed then you think. Awesome! I hope others will check it out - at this price you can be gifting your neighbors with SFG beds and helping in the revolution that Mel strives for.

Sorry to hear that, but I did put possible in the thread. I know some stores markdown and not others. Here in Ohio, I have yet to see MM in a bag.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
actually, perhaps I did not explain well enough
I am sure that home depot will have those things, however it is currently 20 below celcius, which is 10 below farenheit.
I am sure that the area normally set aside for these things are taken up by snow blowers, anti icers, and fancy snow shovels.
They only have so much space and I am sure a large store like HD, likely only gets stuff in in season
The outdoor area was very desolate, needed to don my toque and mitts. But all they had out there was every variety of poison you can apply to make your lawn greener.....ironic.
That is the reason they laughed at me, I WOULD be the only one looking for those kinds of things for many months here

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
I KNOW I will be able to get all the ingredients for Mels Mix, but I really doubt I would ever be able to get Mels mix in a bag here.
We live a long ways from the city and so I try to get everything I could possibly need when we go there.
There is a huge gardening store up here called Art Knapps and they likely would have had everything, but I just ran out of time in the city, and the snow was coming down very heavily, so we needed to head home.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
No offense but thank you for making me feel like we are in a heat wave. It's 24 degrees F. We do have a covering of ice that will hopefully melt today. I was out looking for heat mats, plant markers, etc. Our garden centers are closed also.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
Thanks for the heads-up madnicmom. I was at HD this morning but have to go back because I bought another shop light (who knew 36 little seedlings took up so much room??) and the one I got looks like someone tried to pull it apart and then put it back together! There are pieces missing and it's all dented and the wires are hanging out. Can you believe that?

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
They had this 'great deal' last year and I tried to get some. Was told to order online. Did, and was later informed they didn't have any so if you want these, you'd better order in a hurry, and then hope for the best.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
great news
Went to the little gardening place down the road, and asked about the MM ingredients.
She went to her computer and said yes she had 2 more bags of vermiculite and LOTS of peat moss. and MANY varieties of compost.
So I said, I wonder if I could wait until Monday (I was on foot) SHE grinned at me and said that she felt quite certain I would definitely be the very first square foot gardener of the year to be looking for vermiculite, BUT you never really know when the pot growers might want more of it though
So I just walked home, got my car and picked it all up

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
At one point in 2010 I believe HD accidentally had those marked down to $9 on their web page. Well, word on this forum and others I am sure got around fast and we all orered them. They did not honor the price and no one got their $9 cedar raised beds.
A month ago my HD had no SEEDS! I was dismayed but all of the local nurseries did.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
We had the same thing last year with HD not having any seeds. Being that we're in Florida, where you can plant lots of stuff year-round, I thought it was odd, so I asked one of the garden guys. He told me that it was a new company policy that they wouldn't stock seeds until a certain date (I think it was February sometime!) We thought it was really strange (since Lowe's had all kinds of seeds.....)

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
you know the really odd thing is that at home depot, though they had no peat, no vermiculite and no compost, up here in the great white north .............
They had every kind of seed you could imagine. Perhaps some truck made a wrong turn....

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
I was finally able to check my Home Depot today, and they had recently received shipment of those cedar boxes. But a 4 x 4 x 7 is $35. The 4 x 8 x 10 is over $70.
Menards has a nice selection of "greenhouses" if anyone is interested.

Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
I will certainly check for that at my local HD! But I'm totally with GWN here. You can not get compost or peat moss here before May (and even then you're lucky if you find it before June). However, like others, I have started to see seeds already. I know Walmart has them!
Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
I just realized you must be near me since you have that you live north of Cincinnati (I'm in Lebanon). What store did you go to b/c I really want these if there are any left.
Re: Possible good deal your Home Depot
I checked out my HD They didn't have any of them, not even on regular price (even though the website said they had five in stock). Oh well! I'll keep an eye out. Maybe they'll put them out on sale sometime in the spring.

It was the Lowe's across from Walmart near Bridgewater Falls shopping center. Hope that helps.
