Your very best compost is what you make yourself. But to get started a lot of people use bagged composts, like cow, chicken, etc.

Thanks! I requested the book (newer version) from the library today, I'm hoping to pick it up later tonight.

I'm also leaning against Com-Til now. It kind of freaked me out. pale I'm not sure why chicken/cow/whatever other kind of manure sits better, but it does.

I know what you mean! When you go on their website they make it sound all hunky dory but I can't bring myself to "approve" of it. And you know what? Just because it is available, doesn't mean we have to accept it either. You have Strader's right there at southeast corner of Broad St. and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road. I bet they will have what you need. I have plenty of llama manure if you want good free manure. I have friends in Pataskala who drive out here and bring a couple of garbage pails to load up. Llama manure doesn't burn plants either. I'm about 35 minutes south of Broad and New Albany Rd. Just PM me if you are ever interested.
Hope you get the book, it is a very friendly and easy to read.
And about filling the 12 inch deep bed -- you don't need to go that deep. You could use a 6 inch deep bed of Mel's mix, or you can fill the bottom half of a 12 inch bed with sand too. It might be less expensive than topsoil.

I just remembered Schatt's farm south of you on Gender Rd. near Rt. 33 still has bags of mushroom compost if you are interested in that. Paul Doran up there in New Albany might be closer to you and he has alpacas. Alpaca manure is wonderful too. Let me know if you want to contact him, I can get his phone number for you. Just P.M. me if interested.
