We'll see how (whether) it grows anything over winter time, hoping for something.

I planted 4 squares of beets, 4 of lettuce and then three and a bit of peas (using up some older seeds I had lying around, we'll see if anything grows, I'm not expecting much).

I've got to look at the book again about planting, felt like I was getting a lot of stuff near the middle of the squares, and not much around the edges, not sure if that's the expectation or not.

The other comment I will make so far, mixing Mel's mix is really hard work with only one person, I'm glad I did it because I have 4cu ft of compost spare and it's nicely pre-mixed so ready to go when I replant things, but it was a lot of hard work, and I was only doing a single 4x4, I can't imagine doing it for multiple boxes.

Congrats on your new garden! I love fall gardening. Your pea seeds will hopefully be ok. We planted some we opened last year, and we had all of them come up!

When you say you are only getting stuff in the middle of the squares, do you mean things are only coming up in the middle, and not around the edges at all? If this is happening, maybe the Mel's mix is drying out a little on the edges of your box? You want to make sure that it is staying nice and moist for your seed to sprout.

It is hard work to mix Mel's mix, but it is so worth it!

I hope all goes well with you and your garden! Be sure to keep us posted on your progress.

Duhh, I don't mean things only come up in the middle, more that the way I put in four seeds, seems to end up with 4 seeds towards the middle of the square, and nothing closer to the edge. Probably I'm doing something wrong, need to recheck the book because it seemed like I should be planting a bit further apart, but closer to the edge maybe?

Okay, found the problem, I was planting at the intersection of my lines, not in the middle of my "sub" squares (i.e., I used zip-zap as Mel calls it, to plant 4 seeds, instead of just dividing the square into four).

Think it'll probably come out about the same but we'll see what grows..
