Moving plants

I need to move some flowers, a grape vine, and some raspberry vines. When does this need to be done?

Great question doc_jh! I need to do the same. Actually, my list is longer.

- I will need to move strawberry plants to the bed I intend to make a strawberry/asparagus bed (4' x 16'). Is it okay to let them share a space?

- I have grape, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry plants that need to be moved to pots. What size planters should I have for them?

- I have herbs such as oregano and mint varieties that I want to put in pots. I am playing with the idea of using an 8" window box filled with MM. Will they likely survive the winter in this arrangement?

- Lavender, what do I do with it? Will it come back? Should I put it in a pot?

- Rosemary, what about it?

- Red Robin Tomatoe (dwarf). I really enjoyed this little guy. I have read that I can keep it in the house over the winter. I think I may want to try. Do I use MM for inside the house?

I know I have more, but that is all I can think of for now. Then I have to clean up the garden and cover it for the winter.

I will have lots of plant material and I would love to compost it. However, my backyard composter can only hold so much. Any suggestions? Do I invest in a larger (tumbling) type of composter? Make my own? Pile it up in a corner? Can plant material that may have some type of disease be used as compost? I know I have powdery mildew on some of the squash plants. Other plants have some rust-colored spots. Some of the tomatoes have the yellowing stuff that might be blight. I am still way too new at gardening to know for sure. However, should I keep any of these "suspects" away from my compost, or will the decomposition and winter weather kill off the disease?

I don't know about the strawberry/asparagus. My asparagus have a bed all to theirselves. My local library has a book called Carrotts Love Tomatoes and it's a great book on companion planting. "What size planters should I use?" depends on how big your plants are. Also, why are you moving them to pots?(curious, sorry) And your lavender should come back depending on where you live. In KY my lavender is mostly perennial with a few dead branches depending on how cold it gets.

The herb plants I plan to move to pots are the ones I feel are invasive. They are now in my 4' beds and are starting to move outside the perimeter I planned for them. I want to give them enough of their own room to grow and expand (within reason). Basically, they will be in small (less than a foot) square foot gardens, because I will use the MM and have a depth of at least 6".

I may be moving to a farm in a few years. The plants that are established in pots will move with me. That is another reason for putting them in pots.

I currently have my baby dwarf fruit trees in big pots for that same reason.
