Question On Creating My New SFG Space Empty Question On Creating My New SFG Space

Post  MoneyMan94 9/19/2011, 12:52 pm

This is my first post to the board after reading a few hundred posts over the last week. I am in the process of creating my new space for next year; it will consist of 7 – 4’ x 8’ boxes. We go through tons of tomatoes at our home (sauces, sun dried, etc.) and I want to include tomatoes in this part of my garden. The tomatoes we grow are not vine they so I have always used a stick to tie the plant to. My problem is using the recommended soil depth from the book of six inches I will not be able to put a pole into there to support the tomatoes. If I were not to put the plastic sheet under the box I would be able to push down deeper with the pole, my question is how important is the plastic sheet, if I do not use it what are the ramifications?

Thanks

Rob

Funny how someone asked a similar question just after I did.

I am still hoping someone here has an answer to my question (I have seen a lot of tallented people here) based on my tomato plants.

Thanks

The only thing the plastic sheet will help with is weed control - I can guarantee it will not keep out the burrowing, digging, tunnelling pests like gophers, moles, voles, and such. If you want the weed control, just push your pole down through the plastic to give it more stability. You will only have the small hole right around the pole and that should not be a weed catastrophe. Personally, I used no bottom on my boxes and still had the most weed-free garden I have ever had (this is my first year with my SFG boxes).
