20 lbs of vermiculite
Can anyone tell me how many cubic feet of vermiculite is in a 20 lb. bag. The bag I got from Agway has it measured in pounds and nowhere on the bag is the volume.

I can tell you that when I talked to the nursery about shipping a bag, a 4 cu ft bag was supposed to weigh only 18 lbs, but they had to charge much more shipping because it was so large...

If it's wet, then let it dry out first. Water is 1 way to make it weigh more, if they sell by weight.
A 5 gal. bucket is about 1 cubic foot, approx. if it is about 12 inches wide.

Re: 20 lbs of vermiculite
Every production run will be slightly different. There are many different variables that change production densities of expanded Vermiculite, I'm not going to get into all that. Our goal is 4-7 pound per cubic foot. Other manufacturers maybe slightly different.
If you want to be exact you'll need to make a cu.ft. box and figure out what volume you bought.
Hope this helps.

So that sounds like it is around 4.0 cu ft. Good. Thanks everyone.

Hey Barb,
Just remember when mixing up your MM. You will have a more even 3-3-3 split of ingredients if you measure out each component by volume (buckets). Then you will have the best MM possible. Oh, and if your peat is compressed don't forget to fluff it 1st.

Re: 20 lbs of vermiculite
Unfortunately, I started filling my beds before I read the book so I have to tweak it now. I am removing some of the peat moss and compost and adding vermiculite to my 4' x 4' beds. So I guess if I knew approx. how much of a 4.0 cu ft bag is used, that would help me get closer. I don't have time to empty them at this point. It has rained every night after work and the weekends too so I'm desparate to get this planted. It looks like Thursday & Friday will be okay so I'm planning on planting on those evenings because another storm is brewing for the weekend.

Re: 20 lbs of vermiculite
What is the total amout of peat moss and the total amount of compost you put into your box?
That will help determine how much you need to take out and how much vermiculite to add in.
I will be glad to help.

Re: 20 lbs of vermiculite
Actually a 5 gal bucket is 2/3 cubic ft therefore 3 buckets make 2 cubic foot. Do not compress the bucket contents while measuring although I do slightly firm the top of my peat moss because I carefully hand massage every ounce of it into a fine fluff. Those buckets can be deceiving because most drywall mud pails are only 4.5 gal. Paint or pickles yes are in true 5 gal buckets. Just carefully identify the pail volume first if knowing volume is important to you. That may not really matter if you just want to keep everything going equally and quit when the box is full.

You didn't tell us where this seller was.
Also, please put the information into the vermiculite data base.
