Re: Are you seeing bees?
I think Camp is going to sit me in the corner (with the "meat wasps") for a time out if I don't reform my ways, LOL!
Re: Are you seeing bees?
Regarding stings.
Local venom reactions happen to everyone. This is normal.
With the wasps sting, because they do land on carrion, always be watchful for secondary bacterial infections at the sting site. This is not a problem with bee stings.

Last summer, something stung my lower back. I rushed into the house to disinfect the bite.
Then I noticed that something had followed me inside, and it seemed angry. I sprayed it with an organic remedy, and it died.

I needed to kill one hornet/wasp that followed me indoors. I did not otherwise kill any of their kin.
Re: Are you seeing bees?
I am rather afraid of Yellowjackets as they pursue you with great intent.
Had to stop painting the house for two months one summer as I could not cope with them. They were angry with me all the time until winter arrived. That was only for one year, it must have been an exceptional year for them.

So, are any of you gardeners in warmer climes seeing bees?

Re: Are you seeing bees?
Well, I have been seeing bumbles and mahogany wasps. But it got really cold again yesterday & froze last night. Should continue till Friday. I'm sure they'll be back out by the weekend.
Boy, I hope the freezes don't hurt the blueberries... I got 3 gallons last year out of 5 plants.
One of my dad's friends (SEVERAL years ago) had the ceiling of his sons' room collapse under the weight of 600 lbs of honey. Not to mention some very angry honeybees. Thank God the boys weren't in the room at the time.

Re: Are you seeing bees?
Bees are all over the blossoming orange tree, with a few flitting around the roses. None on the male squash blossom. In the front yard, only on the lavender and rosemary. I'm hoping the potted flowers I'm planning to set around the back yard will increase their presence where they are needed.

OH MY goodness! That's got to be a sticky, messy disaster. I couldn't even imagine the clean up involved!!!AtlantaMarie wrote:Well, I have been seeing bumbles and mahogany wasps. I wouldn't worry about the blueberries.
Apparently, at least two of my three survived the -27F temps we had in early December.

My mom lives in the N GA mountains. She sees black bears.
We've apparently had one in our backyard at some point. Our next-door neighbor startled it. And we get them roaming thru parts of the city from time to time. Always makes the news!

Re: Are you seeing bees?
I have an electric fence around my hives for protection from bears. I hope the bears stay in their dens for another month. (Wishful thinking). The ground needs to thaw out so I can put the fence back up.

Re: Are you seeing bees?
I'm seeing a few bees each day, including a bumblebee or two. I'd never seen a bumblebee on my property before!
Yesterday, there were several honeybees buzzing around my lilac thicket, which is getting ready to bloom. That is, unless the bushes succumb to the freezing nights we've been having (22 - 26 F lately).

Re: Are you seeing bees?
Unrelated, but I'm a little concerned; I haven't seen any bees yet this season. It's been 70s and 80s for a while now, and the only be I've seen was buzzing around my hand when I was cleaning the pool.
I'm not seeing any in my (many) open cucumber blossoms, none are getting drinks from the pool, or in the garden in general.
I'm wondering if there was a "wild" hive in someone's attic/roof, and they got it removed.
WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CUCURBITS?!?!?!

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

seeing bees?
Brainchasm, No bees here except when the orange tree, lavender and thyme bloomed. Then off they go! I have to use the paint brushes. But I am getting summer squash to harvest.
