I went to the garden store and found my different types of 'compost'. i went back and got more, for the flower beds and stuff because i loved the mix it made. While I was unloading the bags i noticed that the steer manure I used did not say composted on it at all. I have noticed that the broccoli i planted last week has started to get burn spots on the ends of some of the leafs.

will I be ok?

I don't know exactly what compost you used obviously but virtually all my Broccoli transplants get a little plant burn when planted and I go by the book for MM. They always recover and the new growth comes on strong and healthy, no burn. Hope this puts your mind at ease.

Very glad you joined us. Apparently you have been "lurking" for a couple of weeks. Come on out of the shadows and join us. This really is a great group of people. Please feel free to ask questions, make comments and share your progress as well as any pictures.

Isn't the Mel's Mix wonderful? Hope your broccolis do well when they start putting out new growth.

Again, Welcome and keep us updated.

hey!! Another Canuck from BC!!! Yippeee!! Grrrrr....will this 'compost' work? 396615 Grrrrr....will this 'compost' work? 396615 Grrrrr....will this 'compost' work? 396615 I am in Prince George. Where are you?

It is great to have you join us. This is my third year of square foot gardening. I love it. Was your compost strong smelling at all? I didn't have an easy time finding compost either. It is tough to get at least five different kinds. Usually, I use my own but it is still frozen in the middle so I had to buy some. Hopefully, your little broccolies will recover.

Best of luck.

Like Old Hippie said, you should be able to tell by the smell. If it doesn't smell very strong at all, it's composted. If it smells pretty strong, but the odor is gone pretty quickly, it's composted (and just maybe had a little finishing-up to do).

If you open the bag, and it knocks you over, and you go visit your garden (or a partial bag of manure that was left open) a week later, and it still knocks you over, it probably wasn't composted.

I had composted cow manure that didn't smell at all. I had composted chicken manure that was pretty rank coming out of the bag (I looked again just to make sure it said it was composted!), but once it was mixed in, you really couldn't smell it. Add a couple of days of sun and rain, and the smell was gone.

thanks for the welcome. I am in Vernon. My father always had a large garden when i was growing up, i hated it, loved the vegetables, hated the weeding, watering and the over the top harvesting. When i read about SFG about 3 weeks ago, i was sold.

no it didn't smell and i am feeling a little better about using it now, Grrrrr....will this 'compost' work? 109486

my spinach has pushed up today. of course the first year of my gardening things have to be so far behind, I am not patient at all. Maybe this will teach me some......

again thanks for the welcome, appreciated.

Canuck, I don't think you are that far behind at all. Of course I live a couple of hours north of you but here, most people don't put much in until the May long weekend. Even that is a bit early for tender stuff like tomatoes and cucs. I don't think we are that much different than you are...maybe a couple of weeks later than you.

Best of luck with everything. Hope it turns out great.
