I when to the home depot today looking for the netting to go on the vertical frames. Is this the plastic orange fencing or do I need to keep looking? I found every thing else though and am excited to get started. Nylon netting for vertical gardening Icon_biggrin

I'm pretty sure they don't mean the orange fence stuff. If I'm not mistaken, they suggest a net made of knotted nylon twine or something like that. The spaces should (ideally) be big enough to put your hand through, so you can tend the plants.

I'm thinking of what I might be able to get CHEAP... and a thought occurred to me... what about fishing net from a surplus store? Not that we are likely to have that kind of fishing supplies up here in the Rockies... I may take a look at the local army surplus store - you never know. I thought about the decorative type that you could get at a party supply, but those seem to be too flimsy and probably are spaced too tightly.

Another thought.... what about a used hockey net..... or an old string hammock... though they're probably spaced too small, too.

.... the wheels are turning.... maybe we'll come up with something that would really work for frugal folks.

Duh!!!

SFGF sells the netting for 59 cents a linear foot ... it's 4' wide. It would ship and arrive before my veggies are tall enough to NEED the net-trellis. I'm going to order 20 feet of the stuff - for less than $12.

Lucky you, Tamara!!!
I'm over in CO so I can't get to the Foundation very easily... but I think I'll plan a trip sometime this summer to see how things are in Mel's neighborhood!

I bought my netting at Home Depot. 5' x 8' for $3.97.
(I used the soccer net from my son's old soccer goal last year, but it was several years old and looking rather nasty.)

Nylon netting for vertical gardening Empty Nylon Netting

Post  jenjehle 4/12/2010, 8:10 am

Not trying to take business away from the SFGF but just this year (one year too late for me) I saw nylon netting at Walmart and Menards here in NE Indiana. Not sure if they carry it at all locations but last year when we were doing our trellis, the SFGF website was the only place we could find any netting for our garden. It's nice that it is now available at local stores finally.

It works great for supporting climbers! Our plants loved it last year.

Good luck getting what you need!

The nylon netting is in the garden department at Home Depot. It should be by the bamboo stakes and other plant supports.

I found the netting at CAL Ranch. It was called tomato netting.

After searching home depot, lowes, and walmart, I finally found my netting at IFA. They were big ones but able to be cut.

That is EXACTLY what I am using, Tim, and it is working out great! I am glad I read in the SFG book about attaching it, though, otherwise I might have trimmed it too tightly and then had a problem tying it onto the conduit.
