Soil Inoculant? Help Empty Soil Inoculant? Help

Do you have to use it? I am growing edemema for the first time, planting it next week and I have read you need soybean Soil Inoculant that the other Soil Inoculant for beans and peas won't work. I planted some blue lake bush beans about 2 weeks ago and didn't use any. They seem to be doing just fine.

Shannon,

Innoculant isn't always necessary .... it's kinda like an insurance policy.

The first questions would be, have you grown this type of plant in the soil yr using before? If so, the Rhizobium (bacteria) is probably already there & you may not need it.

Second question would be ....what does your seed packet say (you don't have to worry about this if yr doing transplants from a reputable nursery)? Many of the newer varieties of seed, especially legumes (beans) come coated. So check the package.

To the best of my knowledge, innoculants are species-specific, so you would need a correct type for the plant your using it on, if you decide to use it.

I honestly don't know much about innoculant so that should also tell you I don't use it. Some here use it and rave about it. It is one thing Mel does mention in his new book, but I just have not yet got around to trying it.

Thanks guys I will not be useing it this year as the budget is maxed. I will let you know what happens. Since I am planting so late I am very limited to what I can grow now and it looks like toms, peppers, okra, and beans. BTW if you like hot peppers at the end of the season I should have Datil pepper seeds, they are a thin walled, hot pepper brought over from Spain by the Minorcans in 1540. We refer to the pepper as the Minorcan Datil Pepper. Talk about an heirloom. PM me if you would like some seeds.

Soil Inoculant? Help Empty Re: Soil Inoculant? Help

For the "what it's worth department", I just used the Burpee Booster on the peas I just planted today. While I had it out, I looked closer at the package and it said on the package it was also good for Soy beans. Just thought I would pass that tidbit along.

I haven't ever used inoculant before, but since so many were recommending it, I figured I'd give it a try.
