avocado trees

I have been looking at Hass avocado trees. when I goggle them they say they can get 60' tall but when I go to the store and look at the ones they have there the tag states 8' to 12' who should I believe. I was hoping I could build a big container to grow it in or am I just fooling myself. they have 5 gal container hass for $24.00 or 15 gal for $75.00 which would be best to buy. thanks for any and all info.

Try looking for a dwarf variety like Little Cado. They're also called "patio" avocado trees and only get 8-10' tall. They grow standard size fruit on a small tree. Just check that the one you pick is self-fertile.

Most things won't get any bigger than you let them Very Happy

If you believe coventional wisdom .... you cant grow magnolia trees in a container either (another 60' tree);

Find a 6-yr-old plant, slap it in a large pot & run with it.

Double-check me on the 6 yrs with the Hass .... I''ve only grown the South American varieties of Avocado's & that was the age they needed to be in order to produce fruit.

Checking the self-fertile is good advice ..... there are plants out there bred for landscaping purposes & just because it's an avocado, doesn't mean the plant will bear fruit.....and that sucks to find out 6-15 years down the road after waiting patiently Shocked

You should be good to go in Cali ...... 95%+ of whatrs available in the states comes out of your backyard & I think the Haas variety started there originally.

They can be very big trees. My Grandmother has one that's right by the driveway to her house and it's well over 6'1. And you get huuuge avocados from it!

We just aquired an avocado and saving the seed to grow our own. I'm just not sure if it's dwarf variety or the regular... I'd like to stick in a big enough container... which is why I am now looking up info for it.

Your trees can be as big as you let them, or as small as you train them. There is a whole movement about backyard orchards and their thing is keep it cut to a height that works for you. You do not have to sell them you just have to harvest for you and yours.

I have an avocado tree that is approximately 30 feet. We have pruned it in the 28 years it has been in the ground, especially the vertical branches. My MIL gave it to us as a seedling. I did not get to choose the flavor of this tree. Last year I attended a Backyard Orchard pruning class and Tom Spellman said that the avocado industry has learned to keep their avocado trees at 14 feet only! They prune and keep the lowest branches knee high. That way they don't have to have hire men to climb up to harvest avocados. It was a dangerous job. I wish I could start all over again. At 14' I could have 3 trees in my backyard, not one gigantic tree. I encourage you to plant one but prune to keep is small.
