200 sgf!!! Empty 200 sgf!!!

Post  duhh Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:59 pm

After the big garden expansion of 2011, we now have aprox 200 sgf of garden beds!!
we now have One 4x8, Five 4x4, Two 12x2 ft 8in, and one 7x 2ft 8 in. Hopefully I figured it out right and have around 200 sgf! I even picked up stuff to make my grids!

I am now busy trying to figure out where to plant what! I have some things that I over wintered still taking up space. One 4x4 is my nephews and off limits. I have 30+ tomatoes I need to find space for. I thought that would be easy, but it is proving harder than I thought because everything I want to grow is a space hog, or likes to trellis! If I have to give some of my seedlings to my friends I'm sure they wont mind.

Hope you guys are all having a good time planning your gardens as well! I'll be planting this weekend!

200 sgf!!! Empty 200 sfg and raised beds

Post  Nonna.PapaVino Thu Feb 10, 2011 4:31 pm

Wow, Duhh, I'm impressed. You've evidently done a good job dividing up your beds. Are they raised beds? You mentioned wanting to plant lots of stuff that likes trellising, have you built any trellises? If so, what design and of what materials? Now that we're dividing up our garden into 4' by 12' beds, I've run out of salvaged deck material. What do other folks use? Has anyone used the "plastic" deck and/or fence material? Nonna

Megan, you're right, SFG. Only excuse I can give is stiffened fingers from pulling grass from a section of garden that lay fallow last year. with a big Ooops, Nonna

SFG means Square Foot Gardening, or Square Foot Garden. Square Feet is a unit of measurement and is abbreviated as S.F., or Sq. Ft. Smile And 200 is a whole lot of opportunity for gardening, woo-hoo!!!! Very Happy I'm jealous. I have boxes to build, myself.

I meant square feet (then added garden on the end) , could have also meant square feet of square foot garden.... anyway sorry for the confusion.

Nonna.PapaVino: Yes the beds are raised. I was able to find raised beds on sale for 10-13$ a month or more ago and bought the Five 4x4. My 8x4 is a board we screwed together last year. Its a 2 inch wide and 12 in high. The others are made with cinderblocks along the back and side wall. So far for trellis, we have used string to train the tomatoes up the wall. We have used some tomato cages, but this spring we will be using mels electrical conduit idea from the book. It will be the strongest and I believe it will work well. My hubby made a pea trellis from thin bamboo and it is in sad shape with all 32 plants climbing up it!

Thanks, Duhh, for the info. Your experience with the bamboo has convinced me not to try using maple saplings from the surrounding forest to build trellises. Wonder if the old pipe hauled up out of the well when it was repaired would work? It's much larger in diameter than the 1/2" recommended in Mel's book. Ugly, too, but, hey, it's free. Nonna

Free is always good. The bamboo my hubby used was amazingly thin. The saplings might work though. I say try it and if it doesn't work its back to the drawing board!
