Here's some interesting info about the ingredients in the "store bought" manure compost I've bought recently. I just checked all my bags.

Bovung Dehydrated Manure and Organic Humus contains:

  • not less than 51% Manure
  • not more than 49% humus from peat, compost (whatever that is), forest products, manure, and/or other organic materials

This was expensive: $8+ a bag

--------------

MooNure contains:

  • Natural forest products, composted cow manure

This was cheap: a buck or two. There is no further information on the package about the materials or percentages. I don't like it. See below

------------

Earthgrow Organic Humus and Manure contains:

  • Not more than 90% organic humus derived from peat, compost (???), forest products, manure, and other organic materials
  • Not less than 10% manure

This also wasn't expensive I don't think, but...

...take a look at the differences in the ingredients here. The Bovung (pricey) had not less than 51% manure compared to not less than 10% manure in the Earthgrow. Who knows what was in the MooNure, except I can attest that it had stones, wood chips and sand or something looking very much like sand.

So it looks like I'm not getting nearly as much manure as I thought. Well, I won't be wasting my money on MooNure any more! The Earthgrow wasn't bad but so little guaranteed manure, plus peat. The Bovung also had peat.

I think next time I blend Mel's Mix I'm going to use less peat. I think I'm putting too much peat in the mix considering that the "manures" I'm using are full of peat too.

I can't wait till I have enough of my home made compost that I won't have to buy this stuff anymore. I'm going to get raw manures for my compost bins and just mix all the blended stuff in there.

Wish me luck!

You and me both !! I was at Lowe's today reading Black Velvet mushroom compost, its made by those that make black kow manure. I didnt find the black kow and thats what I was looking to read the ingredients. The mushroom compost was 4.87 I think. I have this vision of my "compost garden" a place where I can go to my different piles of poo and other composts Smile

I've never heard of humus only compost and mine says 100% mushroom, 100% sheep and the cow doesn't give a percent.

I want your 100 percent manures Smile lololololol The stuff I used from Lowes the first box I mixed on my own was 1.49 a bag, and when I felt it, it was just like black sand. I should have known, I questioned it but Im new at this what do I know. Having a blast at it too mind you. I want to put up a shady area to sit longer down there.
Well now I have horse stuff, but its still mixed with some things Im ok with that, I know 90 percent is poo. My son and I shoveled it ourselves and go back this week to finish that one stall. Two more to go after that, I feel like Im a 49er and on the gold trail Smile
