Argentina, quien esta siguiendo este metodo? Empty Argentina, quien esta siguiendo este metodo?

Post  valelab 10/10/2010, 5:41 am

Hola,

(ragged translation)

"Hello,

I live in Buenos Aires, a big city, and I don't have a garden, only a terrace and I'm asking how to adapt this method to growing on a terrace. There's strong sun for most of the day, and sometimes the plants suffer because I can't always water them every day.

Also, lately the weather has been half crazy, with wintry days alternating with summery days, and we are already well into the spring [Argentina is in the southern hemisphere, so valelab has the opposite seasons most of us do]

I would love to meet people in the same situation, even better if you understand Spanish. I read English, but I don't know the words for gardening , all the technical words, but I think I can get it right.

Best regards, and a salute to Mel for all his work."

Valelab, if it is easier for you, write in Spanish, and there are a few of us who can get the idea across to the others and try to help you with what they say. My Spanish is not very good, but I think you will be very happy with these techniques.

(Bienvenido!)

We have a member who is making a garden on the roof of their building...so if it works for them, it can work for you!

Saludos!

Acara, help me out with this, please -- my Spanish is Cubano/Puertorriqueno....so it's pretty wonky to begin with, and being rusty doesn't help!

Welcome to the forum, Valelab. Argentina, quien esta siguiendo este metodo? 61949 Greetings from almost northern Canada. My apologies to you that I cannot reply in Spanish but unfortunately, I have never learned more than a few words of that lovely language. Hopefully, someone else here on the forum, can translate this for you.

In Vancouver, British Columbia a lot of people do rooftop, balcony or terrace gardening. There is also someone on the forum from Eastern Canada, who has posted pictures of his/her rooftop garden. It seems to me that SFG would be wonderful for terrace gardening. You can make the boxes whatever size you want.

If hot sun during your growing season is an issue, perhaps you could use some sort of screen as shade protection. Several people have been using different kinds of self-watering containers, some purchased and some that are self-designed, to deal with the watering issues. There are a few threads on here with pictures of those as well. Unfortunately, since this is mostly in English, it may make searching for them a bit difficult for you. However, just ask and I am sure someone will point you in the right direction.

Best of luck in your gardening journey!!

Avoid the word "straw" & "cowboy" & we'll be okay ...LOL (the Puertoriqueno half should explain my point...LOL).

We'll muddle through it, no worries...

I read Spanish OK, but am better off replying in English.

Many people have gardens on terraces who successfully use this method. It really is perfect for that.

As far as sun goes, shade cloth or providing some late afternoon shade might help. I am in southern California and my plants got full sun all summer and did fine.

Watering is another matter. Just make sure your beds are saturated when you start and water when needed. If you cannot get out to water daily, can you get a timer and a sprinkler if daily watering is needed?

We have one man in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is extremely hot, who made his beds deeper to compensate for the very quick loss of water in that climate. According to Mel, that isn't needed but las Vegas is a special case.

Good luck and keep us informed. And don't worry about the language - we all have Google translate.

I celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary in Buenos Aires! It's a wonderful city.

Everyone. You can get a "literal" translation at www.babelfish.yahoo.com. It will give you an idea of what is being said until someone translates.

Hola, Vale,

Yo hablo muy poco Espanol, pero Bienvenido!

I live in the state of Missouri in the Upper South region of the US. We have hot, humid summers here. I have found with growing tomatoes and other vegetables, some varieties do better than others, so you might want to experiment with different ones to find out which works best in your growing conditions.

glad you\'re here

Argentina, quien esta siguiendo este metodo? Empty hola!

Post  valelab 10/11/2010, 1:53 am

Hola!

Val

Argentina, quien esta siguiendo este metodo? Empty Table top gardening

Post  ander217 10/11/2010, 8:19 am

(Thank goodness for translate.google.com)

Hola, Vale,

(Hello, Vale,
If you want to learn more about table top gardening, Boffer is our expert. He can probably tell you how much they weigh, and might be able to think of a way to keep them from displacing your roof tiles. You can also use the search feature for table top or TT gardening to learn more.)

Hola Vale!

When I first met my DH we tried to learn Esperanto, the artificial language that was to unite the world.  We got as far as chapter five in the Teach Yourself books and I am afraid it has not united the World.  I think SFG is doing a much better job.

When we first came to Canada, it was my intention to learn French but that did not work out either as French on TV was immediately dubbed in English or sub-titled. Mad

Anyway, glad you\'re here (HOLA) valeab happy hi after your six-year absence.
