A few days ago I harvested some Cherry Belle radishes from my SFG. They were tasty, and the plants looked very healthy. They were planted in 100% Mel's Mix.

The radishes were not nice and round like the ones pictured in the Burpee catalog, but were elongated and shaped somewhat like a dumbbell. The seeds germinated in about 3 days. I noticed that, when I watered them with a watering can, the Mix seemed to wash away a little from the radish root. When harvested, the radishes were about 1/4 th exposed to the air.

Should I have dumped more Mix around the plants as they were developing? Should I have pushed the plants deeper into the Mix? Like i said earlier, they tasted fine and the plants were healthy.

The MM does have a tendency to settle. I've read different systems for dealing with this.

  • Overfill the box from the start

  • Water the mix after filling the box and then give it a few days to settle, add more mix and then plant

I'm sure someone else can chime in with more suggestions.

I didn't realize that the mix would settle so much when I filled my box. It did settle significantly and could of definitely used a top-up. I'll be sure to overfill my boxes next year.

No, radishes do fine being exposed. At times they can look as though they are just sitting on top of the soil.
