I *finally* went and got some bulk compost at a local place (Scott Rd and the 215 for anyone near - on Haun). I was trying to visualize the difference between a yard and half a yard and decided for my back's sake to get half a yard of compost. They make theirs with steer manure, horse manure and green matter. I have no truck so used my Buick. In all I used about 12-14 bags, not sure and it JUST fit into the car. So rule of thumb - half a yard for a four door. Bring a truck if you want more.

Idea for new SFG sales product: Dangly car deodorant thingy that hangs from your rear-view mirror. Shaped like a pony! (Pink, of course.)

I would love to have been a birdie on the car when they dumped the compost at your feet. To see the expression on your face and to hear what you mumbled...priceless! Wink

ROTFL!! That sounds like something I would do and the car would end up smelling like horsey pooh for the next six months! My husband tends to be a bit picky about stuff like that after having some milk leak out of a carton in some recycling I had in the car. It smelled of sour milk for the whole summer even after I scrubbed it so now he insists we use the trailer for hauling even small amounts of anything that would smell it up.

THe 1/2 yard rule is good to know! My first thought was that you need a roof rack. Shocked

PS: For the elimination of odor of something spilled in carpet I recommend a product called CONSUME. It works great! and fast.

My first thought was, "Is that all?" until I started shoveling and then I realized it was plenty. But nothing like the stink of a barn to get a person busy unloading and getting the stuff to the back yard. I am just off to the shower now...still haven't found the pony but the peas and broccoli should love it!

I've put a lot of things in my car, but never (yet) horse manure. I did once put a bale of hay in the trunk of a brand new car (oops! not a good idea!)

And I had a little red truck when I had horses. I would use it to clean the old hay and manure out of the field. One day I found grass growing in the little grooves of the bed liner, where the "compost" and seeds collected!

But Chopper, you are my new role model and inspiration!

The bin was obtained from Target or HD or somewhere like that. I see them all the time. We normally use them for recycle stuff - one for cans, one for plastics. I dumped the plastics on top of the cans and then reloaded when I returned.

The roof rack would be so you could fit more onto the car. I'm just sayin'... MORE COMPOST! Twisted Evil

My LW is always saying that I don't need to buy one b/c I always get the job done with our tiny van. Well, now I know what to put in that van so that she never lets me use it again!

I traded my chevy car in for a Chevy Truck 5 years ago.........memories--- I also use to load my car down with manure, peat moss, etc........ As the years went by, I kept buying more and more and needed more loading space. bounce

Then i got this wild idea to buy a cow. hold the bucket in place and catch it. rofl

My little bull is 10 months old. Fed him from a bottle since he was a week old til he was 3 months old.
Puts out nice poo.

Just FYI, the big buckets of scoopable kitty litter that have a flap type top, seal well enough to keep the smell inside, as long as you snap the lid back down tight. You MUST rinse off the outside of the bucket very thoroughly, and let dry, before putting it in your car. Make sure it is wedged firmly in place behind the seat, or otherwise secure it very well, so it doesn't tip over when you go around a corner.

All of the bags held tight and the smell did not last long. When I put it in the garage the first day I unloaded but forgot to leave a window open. The next day I did and the smell dissipated rapidly. FYI.

Something you may want to try instead of buying the wire bag holder. I cut the bottom out of an old plastic trash can. I use 33 gallon bags so they are snug at the top.

Install a bag and fill it up almost full, release the bag from the top of the plastic can, tie the top off and lift the plastic can. May have to jiggle it some but the bag will fall out the bottom. The only time this didn't work was when I filled it with twigs and stuff. Had a problem but finally got it out through the top instead. I'm going to cut up the side some and install a latch of some kind the hold the side together when filling and then I can release the bottom half and not have the probelm of the bottom smaller than the top when I'm trying to get the bag out.

The veggies are dancing with delight in the sun light.

I did the same thing with my car this past summer. It wasn't manure though, just mulch, but I ended up cleanig the car for the rest of the night after I got done unloading it. Let me tell you- shoveling is hard work, especially if you are by yourself and in 90 degree weather. Hew! thinking

So don't worry, you are not by yourself in this. Not all of us have trucks!
