It's been just a little over 60 days since I planted my carrots, so I thought I would pull a couple today and see how big they were getting. Note that these are miniature types. The longer ones are called Babette and the little round ones are called Romeo. I purposely chose these to grow in the standard 6" of soil.

Much to my surprise, they are big enough to eat! I didn't do a very good job of thinning, so there were also a few teeny tiny ones. The Babettes are only supposed to get about 3" to 4" long and the Romeos are supposed to be about radish size.

This is the first time I succeeded with carrots in the SFG, so I am delighted!

I'm not laughing. I pulled one of mine up last week and it was still way too tiny to eat. Good for you!

Your carrots look great Don't laugh at my carrots :-) Icon_cheers I've grown some of the round ones before and I liked them.
Mine so far this year seem to be in funny looking shapes.

I was just being silly with my subject line...I was thinking about those pictures of Josh's big carrots when I wrote it! ;-)

In another thread we were talking about how hard it seems to get carrots to grow in Mel's Mix and what the package states for "days to harvest" is not always what happens in reality. The little round ones said 60 days and the longer 70 days, so I guess these are pretty close. I'll just pull a few at a time as needed for salad. I'll see if they can get a little bigger.

What's really funny is the only thing I could see on that longest carrot was that little green knob on the top at soil level, so when I pulled it I was very surprised at it's size! I hope the rest of them surprise me too!

I grew the Nantes half long and though they seemed to take forever, they were definitely the best, most full carrots I have ever grown. I think carrots are the slow slugs of the garden, but they sure seem to like that friable soil.

I did the same and pulled up the 2 carrots that survived ... they looked like skinnier versions of the 3 tiny ones on the left in your picture!
I'm not sure if I will try carrots again Embarassed

I wouldn't dare laugh. They look great!

Mine don't have much flavor. I have tried three varieties, and they are all very bland, not sweet like the ones I am used to getting at the store...

Anyone know why?

Your carrots are lovely! DH just bought our fall carrot seeds yesterday. August 1st is our date to start planting carrots here in SC, so it's right around the corner! I'm hoping we'll be able to fill up our old refrigerator with them -- we use carrots in so many things and they keep so well.

I pulled the rest of the Babettes a couple of days ago and all but two were between 4" to 6" long. I'm going to let the little round ones grow a bit more. I really am happy with the harvest...just wish I room to plant more!
