So, ive got TPS or potato berries
I'm thinking of harvesting them when their are ready and seeding them out for next year, just for fun and experiment, whatcha think?
I had to show the hubby and tell him to keep the kiddo away.

'tater 'maters
I had some on my Yukon Golds this year. I never thought about saving them for seed. If you save yours, keep us posted on how they do.

TPS
TPS stands for True Potato Seed.
When we plant seed potatoes, we are actually planting what amounts to cuttings from the mother plant. The eyes sprout, send up leaves and stems, and more potatoes are produced underground. Most varieties still bloom, but the majority of the plants no longer set fruit which contain true potato seeds.
Occasionally you'll get a potato plant which makes fruit from the flowers. They look like small tomatoes or berries. They're usually green, although some varieties have a blue or purple color. A few of my Yukon Golds produced green fruit which looked like green cherry tomatoes. Some varieties are more likely to set fruit than others.
The fruit is poisonous and should never be eaten. I'm guessing that's why Chocolatepop kept the kiddoes shooed away from her fruiting plants.
You can save the seeds from the fruits for planting, but you probably won't get the same type of potato again. Still, it would be fun to try and see what happens.

Thank you for the info! I always figured that potatoes were always just made from other potatoes, but it makes sense that they had to originate from someplace.

Re: So, ive got TPS or potato berries
Thats what I love about these forums..I learn something new every time I log on !! I have a potato plant that I harvested the potatoes from a couple of months ago. Just for kicks I stuck the root end back in the dirt and it has continued to thrive and look VERY healthy, altho very small. I'm going to see just how long it goes. I noticed today it looks like it has the beginnings of bloom buds, I really hope it makes some of these seed pods!! I will certainly plant them if it does and see if I get something that resembles a potato.. Some of my best tomatos this year are coming from a plant that volunteered in the compost pile....

i "think" the potato the berries are from is a yellow something or another or maybe a yukon!
Re: So, ive got TPS or potato berries
Wow, I totally would have assumed those were tomatoes. How incredible.

Saving TPS
Here's an article I found online that tells how to save your own potato seed as well as breed your own variety that's more adaptable to pests and diseases in your own growing area. It was interesting reading even if you never plan to save your own seed.

SNAP means ?![]()
Is that a British expression? It is a card game played by kids, you each put down a card and if they are the same number then the first person to shout "snap" gets the lot. And the person to get all the cards wins.
Ander217 had just posted the same link as I found, so I said Snap. Obviously I should have just not posted

Did I confuse everyone?

Re: So, ive got TPS or potato berries
It makes perfect sense, now that I know what you mean! No wonder I couldn't find it in any texting/online shortcut lists :o
Re: So, ive got TPS or potato berries
It's the British version of JINX -- when you say exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

Very funny...here in the states, teenagers say SNAP as a slang when they get a good jab in at another kid. Like if one kids makes a mean joke or insult to another kid and it's pretty witty sounding all the other kids around will say SNAP in this long drawn out scarcastic tone. They often will simutaneously snap their fingers as well. Kids can be so mean...but language and expression is so interesting to me.

Re: So, ive got TPS or potato berries
It's a challenge sometimes, middlemamma -- there's British English, American English, and European English (spoken by those for whom English is a 2nd or 3rd language) -- once in a while, there's a gathering of enough of us that there's someone from all three categories, and we have to stop and think which meaning is which!
Snap is also used on this side of the water to substitute for darn, rats, shucks, etc.

Snap?
Boffer, I'm so glad you asked what SNAP meant. I was worried, thinking maybe I had unknowingly insulted someone.
Ice Maiden, does this mean you win all of my potato berries?
(We have a similar version of that card game here in the U.S called Slap Jack. You only slap the cards when someone turns over a Jack.)

Being proper is not all it's cracked up to be. Besides, a lot of us learned something new today.
I've never played that game, but I've gotten a black and blue arm from playing Slug Bug!
