seeds to plant in july

looking for suggestions of seeds to plant in july. so far planted some carrots. what else?

zone 10 in southern california. not much heat out here to speak of.

4 is spelled "frigid"

It would probably say "in zone 4 in July, don't plant anything, you might have snow next month--just shop at the grocery store."

I forget where I got this chart - and I looked in all of my bookmarks! It wouldn't help you anyway as it was specific to southern California, I am sad to say. But I know I cut and pasted it into excel. There is a chart HERE that might be useful.

Basically I made the chart then I went to some sources that spoke to my particular climate and filled it in specific to what I deal with and deleted anything I had no intention of planting and added things that were not on the list.

After customizing it, I cut and pasted it into a word doc and added some other info I wanted handy - like how may plants per sf of each item so I didn't have to be running all over looking for it. It was an evening of research that has saved me all sorts of stress. Any changes I make. I make on the excel doc and then cut and paste again into the word doc.

Since gardening is year round here, I figured I needed it. It has been HUGE and I love it. It is worth the effort to put one together. One that included when to start plants indoors, frost dates, etc would be very useful. Were I to move to Massachusetts, I would do one for that climate too.

That's all I see, too (except for the one yellow square that says JULY)...

Very interesting. What it is is a grid for each month. Each square in the top row indicates the month. I have a separate grid for each month and I scroll through them to decide what to plant. It was easier for me to break them out month by month. The current month is highlighted at the top, but the green squares indicate each month the item can be planted.

Down the left hand column are veggies. Each veggie listed can be planted in July in Zone 18 in California. The list is as follows for whoever was asking: Beans, bush and pole, beets, carrots, corn, cukes, lima beans, melons, peppers, squash - summer and winter, tomato plants.

I use this to plan my boxes. It helps to know the whole planting time frame because if I have to make tough choices, I will know if I can plant later or if this is the last months I can plant a particular item.

I am not sure exactly what you are seeing so it is hard to explain, but I hope this helps.

OK, that is what I thought I had posted. Sorry if it doesn't make sense to people. My logic stream is often counter to others. Did anyone else see less than that?

More explanation would be good, though... are the dark green boxes things that you planted and are growing? and the light green is transplant? And does each column represent a month? and we're seeing what you have growing from Jan thru July (July being the only month in YELLOW, so that's the current month)?

Maybe I'm just not seeing it in my head the way you intend.

I saw what Boffer saw, but it confuses me. (Sorry, Chopper dear!)

Why do corn and cukes have 5 green squares for July, and Beets have 8.5? Are you planning how many squares you are going to plant? Or are you reading down the column under the July heading and seeing that all the squares are green, so every plant listed is OK to plant for your region???

What confuses me further is the Google doc you emailed me seems to have a different overall grid pattern for each month. Shouldn't it just be one same grid for the year (if I am reading this right) and you just read down the column for the month you are in??

Read the column down under the July month title. Dark green is optimal for that zone for that month.

I am sorry this ended up being so confusing. Megan provided the link
to where I got the original grid. I found it to hard to look at July
(as an example) and scroll down to see what grew then. By the time I
got to the bottom, I had forgotten what was on the top!

So I went a step further and using the same format - 12 months across
the top row, vegetable names down the left column and best planting
times by month - I broke it down month to month and deleted any
vegetables that could not be grown that month. This gives me an easy
view if I want to see what to plant in July or August or January or...
So, the Yellow July pertains to that column only. But I can also see
Jan-Dec at a glance for that veggie. So if I don't have room for
something in July, I can see if it is still OK to plant it in August
should I have room then.

If that doesn't make a good bedtime story, I don't know what does. Hope
this helps - or at least bores you enough to forget what the question
was....

... really, though, thanks Chopper, and Megan (for posting the link) ... this makes sense to me now. I'll be putting together something similar for my area (when I have a little time!)
