roots spread out so far

Hi every one,

I went out to one of my boxes to put in a worm tube and I started digging down about 2 feet or so away from my zucchini and a tomato plant and started ripping into roots. I tore some up for sure. Do you think my plants will be ok? Do you guys find that your plant's roots spread out really far.
This box by the way is the only one doing pretty good. My other boxes have yellowing leaves, stunted growth and are being eaten alive by bugs. I'm trying to take care of what I'm pretty sure is a nutrient deficiency by adding our own made compost (finally ready) and some worm castings that I bought locally. I also fertilized with some organic fertilizer even though I didn't want too---just really desparate. I'm certain it's a nutrient deficiency related because my plants have picked up some after applying the fertilizer.

Any way, do you think my roots have spread out sooo much due to looking for nutrients? Or is it normal to go so far out?

Tomatoes, and most large, warm weather plants have big, big root systems. You want that....yeah, they look for nutrients, they look for water...they just grow. You usually won't see a huge, green, healthy plant with a miniscule root system. I think you're good, and I wouldn't worry too terribly much about the roots. Sometimes a disturbance could be a problem, but I've found it to be a non-issue most of the time.
