What to plant next?? Empty What to plant next??

Post  jillschmill 6/29/2010, 2:37 pm

I'm in St. Louis and have a few extra squares (courtesy of the bunnies who devoured some of my beans). What can be planted now? Last year I put everything in my garden at one time, then just quit when I harvested, so this continual planting option is still new to me. What's everyone planting for round 2?

Is it too late to plant bush beans? If I can try again, I will.

I'm assuming it's too late for strawberries...???

Thanks!

bush beans are a great option! even a pepper/eggplant if you can find a plant. you could try strawberries, but they are a perennial remember and set out runners and your harvest would be less than stellar this year. how many squares do you have?

What to plant next?? Empty Re: What to plant next??

I have 4 squares that have strawberries planted, but haven't produced fruit yet that I've seen (I planted in April). They are starting to send runners to other squares, so I'm not sure whether to keep these or tear them out.

I have 4 squares of green beans that were eaten by bunnies. The bunnies are under control now, but I'm waiting to see if my beans recover, or if I should tear them out. They are mostly stalks still.

I have 2-3 other squares here and there, including one pepper that the bunnies also got. I'd love to replant peppers if I can - thanks for that idea.

I appreciate any thoughts!

Its up to you to keep or or snip the runners. i planted half as many plants knowing i was going to use the runners and they really exploded from the runners.

Chocolatepop,

I'm interested... what does this mean: "i was going to use the runners and they really exploded from the runners"

Does this mean that you snipped the runners and planted them? I had no idea you could do that!

this is exactly what i'm planning to do as well - except that i hadn't planned on putting the runners into pots (okay - so it's not "exactly"). i plan to secure them into the bed where i want them to grow and snip them off the parent when they are established. i've tried to clip all the blossoms, but am allowing the runners. i only bought 4 plants for a 5x2 bed and figure in a few years it will be full! Yum!

What to plant next?? Empty Late planting

Post  ander217 7/1/2010, 7:24 am

I'm three hours south of you in the Upper South 6b. Yesterday I planted my 4' x 4' x 1' box with White Cobbler potatoes. I plan to keep piling Mel's Mix around them as they emerge, and keep them well watered. I hope that keeps the heat from killing the plants.

My husband made two more 4' x 10' beds in our garden - per old-style SFG. They are in the location of our former row-garden where we just pulled our potatoes and onions, and he mixed lots of rice hulls and compost into the soil. We've never tried planting in mid-season - we've always planted an early spring garden, the main summer garden, and then our fall plantings of turnips and greens, so this is totally an experiment.

In our two 4' x 10' beds, we planted one whole bed to Luscious sweet corn, and in the other bed we planted bush beans - two squares of bush lima beans, two of wax beans, four of Dragon's Tongue shelly beans, twelve of Improved Horticulture shelly beans, eight of bush Blue Lake, and we planted two zucchini in the remaining eight squares.

I have no idea if these will come up and grow in the hot summer weather, but I'll keep you posted. About a month ago I soaked some bush Blue Lake green bean seed for a few hours and planted one square to them in my 4' x 4' box. They never came up. When I dug around in that square yesterday before planting potatoes, there was no sign whatsoever of the seed. No idea what happened to the nine seeds I planted in that square. Birds? Worms?

Beans and peppers would be my suggestion as well; also okra maybe if you like it. If you want to wait a few more weeks you can start planting for fall.
