This is a view of my garden showing the rows of potatoes and onions on the right. The beds are on the left, and my tomato boxes can be seen against the back fence. (There is one 4'x4' box hidden behind the corn.) Our next task is to put a layer of rice hulls on the walkway to smother the grass since walking on it hasn't seemed to kill it.

These are my Egyptian Walking Onions (Winter Onions) in their bulb-making phase. Each of these bulbs will grow a new onion plant.

June Photos of my Garden Empty weed-free paths

Nice garden! Thanks for sharing with us. I love the onions---just the name makes them worthwhile to grow!

You might want to consider putting down layers of newspaper or something similar under you path mulch. I had read about it in Organic Gardening and tried it with small hope, since Tennessee becomes a jungle in summer and grass is hard to stop. But it works! Use at least 6 layers of newspaper where the grass is well-established, and keep it wet as you go or it will blow away--the job is a real pain but it pays off, and kids are good newspaper-sprayers!

Also, with my Organic Gardening subscription came a little tips booklet. In the back of it I saw a "weed killer" recipe that seemed too good to be true, but it works as well. Mix 3 parts vinegar with 1 part liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. If you over-do it your soil will become acidic and nothing will grow. I would never ever EVER use it in my beds or in the lawn, just here and there in the paths were a weed pops up now and then. Works like a charm. I wander through with the bottle a couple of times a month and spray a weed or grass tuft here and there. Not bad, considering how much lush grass I covered up!

June Photos of my Garden Empty More Photos of my June Garden

Post  ander217 6/14/2010, 10:48 am

This is my bed which has zinnias and bush beans on the left, sweet potatoes in the center, and more zinnias on the right. The bush beans appear to be devouring the sweet potatoes at present, but the beans are setting pods while the sweets are just getting started. The beans will probably be finished bearing in a few weeks and I'll pull them out, leaving plenty of room for the sweet potatoes to roam to their roots' content. (Do you see the yellow swallowtail butterly on the pink zinnia on the left? It was SO beautiful.)

Can you guess what this next plant is?

June Photos of my Garden Garden21

It's a parsnip that went to seed. I missed one parsnip last year when digging them. They are biennials, and when this one came up this year I decided to let it grow and collect seed from it. I think it looks like a cross between dill and Queen Anne's lace.

The next photo is our okra and Moon and Stars watermelon bed. Too bad you can't see the yellow speckles on the melon leaves characteristic of Moon and Stars. The okra leaves are wilted, but I took this photo in the heat of the day. When the temps and humidity moderate later in the day, the leaves are fine. Our corn does the same thing on days with high heat and humidity, even though they are watered regularly.

These are some of our tomatoes.

Lavender, bee balm, and Green oregano from my herb bed. We need rain.

Finally, one last shot of our beds. You can still see the butterfly under the yellow zinnia.

I have some really nice zinnias that are doing well but haven't bloomed yet. Seeing yours gets me excited for when mine finally do burst with color! Yours are beautiful!

Thanks for sharing your pictures!
