Does anyone know where we can buy seed potatoes now? We have cleared out some squares in a deep box, and we'd like to try a late planting of potatoes but we can't find the seed potatoes.

I don't like planting grocery store potatoes because I worry I'll introduce diseases into my soil.

Try a feed store in your area. Store bought taters are sprayed with a chemical to prevent them from sprouting eyes - and if they do, they seldom make good plants.

crop rotation - Source for late-crop seed potatoes? Empty sprayed potatoes

Ah, that explains why home-grown potatoes always seem to sprout so much sooner than the store-bought kind.

I remember when I was a kid my grandma sending me down to her root cellar to rub the sprouts off of her potatoes. I was sure a giant spider was going to eat me, but I survived it.

Since you're just wanting to trying a few squares, you could try organic potatoes from the store. At least they will not have been sprayed with chemicals. My sister grew Yukons awhile back from store-bought organics. I would them sit out in the light a few days to see if they would sprout first. Should not take long to see if they are viable! You might intentionally look for a bag of old ones at the store, you might get a head start that way!
