Hello. I am in Spring Hill Florida (zip 34606) which I THINK is in Zone 9, if that helps. We have thought of starting a garden for the last few years and now I just recently learned about SFG and I really think I can do it ! (I am usually not one with a green thumb). So, I'm eager to get started...but I wonder if it being it is getting toward the end of May if it's too late to start something. Anything !
I have found a spot in my very tree-filled yard that can get about 5+ hrs of FULL sun per day.

If anyone can tell me if it's possible to start something right away, or if I have to wait until the Fall.

Thanks so much.

Is it too late to start ??? 396615 to SFG and the SFG Forums!

Christine, it is never too late to start a garden! First thing is to build the box, then mix Mel's Mix. Once you get that done, the grid made and the box filled you can always find something to put in there. Your local nurseries will still have plants, I'm pretty sure. If not veggies at least some annual flowers which you can replace next year with veggies if that's your wish.

I don't know anything about gardening in FL but there sure are a lot of people on these forums from Florida. I know they will chime in here, too. You are in the right forum so FL folks will be seeing you post.

Even if for whatever reason you cannot get anything in the box this year (and I'm certain you will) you will be all ready for next season Is it too late to start ??? Icon_smile

Glad you discovered SFG and look forward to hearing about your progress.

THank you so much ! I've cleared my space and plan to hit the stores tonight to get my "supplies". I even found vermiclute !! I noticed my local Home Depot/Lowe's still had some tomato plants, herbs, peppers...I'd even be happy to start with that. Hope some florida folks chime in and send me some encouragment !

Thanks again !

Is it too late to start ??? 61949 Hi Christine !! I used to live in Vero Beach and New Smyrna Beach, opposite coast from you. This time of year I would have green beans, squash, okra, and field peas. These all like the hot weather. Tomatoes don't seem to like the humidity as much, they will drop their blossoms . You will find you have to fight the bean weavils on the peas and beans, and the ever present squash borers. The okra gave me the fewest problems! Plan to have everything ready to go for your fall garden, where you are you will be able to garden and harvest right thru to spring!! Happy Gardening !!
